Today is the day before Memorial Day weekend which means in the Madison area it is “Take your brat to work day.” Now – I don’t have a job but my hubby brought me down to his work for the morning so I could enjoy this fabulous tradition! It was a pretty awesome way to start my day. Next up – hot yoga at Twisted Grit Yoga! I haven’t done yoga in a studio since pre-pandemic so I’m a little nervous but not really since I know Yogi Amy will let me do whatever feels good to me.
Before I head to yoga I figure I should share with you Block 5 of the Barn Star Sampler for the Quilt Along being run by the Fat Quarter Shop.
If this is your first visit be sure to check out how this whole process is going in previous posts!
The fifth block of the Barn Star Sampler is called Northern Star.
Here is the first block I ended up creating. All blocks for this quilt feature fabrics from
- Celestial Fabric by Zen Chic for Moda Fabrics
- Birthday Fat Quarter Bundle by Sarah Watts for Ruby Star Society
- Unruly Nature Fat Quarter Bundle by Jen Hewett for Ruby Star Society
- Pietra Fat Quarter Bundle by Giucy Giuce for Andover Fabrics.
- Essex Linen by Robert Kaufman Fabrics
I am seriously loving mixing these four lines of fabrics together! It’s really creating some unique looks!
For the second block I decided that I wanted to swap the values and use darker colors for the background and lighter colors for the star.
I also think I’m loving the darker background blocks better than the light background blocks. They just really “pop.”
And here is a picture of the two blocks side by side! They won’t be next to each other in the final quilt layout but it’s fun to see just how different they can be! My big design wall is full of another quilt I’m working on right now so I can’t show you all the blocks together just yet! But I will soon I promise!
Keep up with the quilt along by following @fatquartershop and @persimondreams on Instagram to see and share work from your fellow quilters. Don’t forget to use #BarnStarSamplerQAL to share your progress on social media, so we don’t miss seeing your quilts!
Other quilters are sewing along too! Be sure to check out their versions of the blocks – it’s always fun to see the path everyone decides to take!

Loving your blocks! Switching up to have a dark background is what I am doing next month! 💕💕

I enjoy your thoughts and your approach to the barn star sampler.I like your idea about changing the value on the second block. I am sewing along too. I am only doing one star a month. This is in case it starts looking like scrambled eggs. Then I can ease in blocks to corral my tangents. And I can see where I’m headed. I am using my dsquilts hoarded fabric. Eeek!
