Clue 1 for the Fifth Annual Project QUILTING Mystery QAL

December 22, 2022 by persimondreams 2 Comments

It’s time! Let’s get started on the fifth annual Project QUILTING Mystery Quilt Along. If you don’t have your fabric pulled yet just head HERE to find out what you need.

This clue will have you creating eight four patches and four nine patches.

Before you get started I just want to highly recommend that you check your 1/4-inch seam allowance. A lot of the pieces in this quilt along are small so if you have too much of a 1/4-inch seam or too little of one, things will get wonky quickly. Perkins Dry Good Seam Guide ruler (#ad) is a great tool to help make sure you are sewing a proper seam.

Clue 1 Cutting Instructions

Fabric A

(4) 2″ x 18″ strips
(1) 2″ x 9″ strip

Fabric BG1

(2) 2″ x 18″ strips
(2) 2″ x 9″ strips

Fabric BG3

(1) 2″ x 18″ strip

Construction

Four Patches

Sew an 18″ strip of Fabric A to an 18″ strip of Fabric BG1. Press towards Fabric A.

Sew an 18″ strip of Fabric A to an 18″ strip of Fabric BG3. Press towards Fabric A.

Cut the strips into (8) 2″ x 3.5″ strip sets in the Fabric A/BG1 and (8) 2″ x 3.5″ strip sets in Fabric A/BG3.

Layout the strip sets so it creates a four patch. Sew together and press to one side.

When you’re done you’ll have four sets of Fabric A/BG1 four patches and four sets of Fabric A/BG3 patches.

Nine Patches

This next step makes two different strip sets.

Strip Set 1 – Take (2) 18″ strips of Fabric A and sew them to either side of (1) 18″ strip of Fabric BG1. Press towards Fabric A.

Strip Set 2 – Take (2) 9″ strips of Fabric BG1 and sew them to either side of (1) 9″ strip of Fabric A. Press towards Fabric A.

Cut (8) 2″ x 5″ strips from the 18″ strip set and (4) 2″ x 5″ strips from the 9″ strip set.

Lay the strips to create the nine patch shown above. Press towards the outer strips.

In the end you’ll have eight 3.5″ x 3.5″ four square patches and four 5″ x 5″ nine patches.

Clue 1 is DONE! The next clue will be posted tomorrow at noon. See you back here for more fun!
