Hello and welcome everyone! I know you are all just as excited as I am for the ninth season of Project QUILTING to begin! Everything you need to know about how Project QUILTING began can be found on THIS page.
Normally Trish Frankland of Quilt Chicken writes up these posts and is full of whimsy and great vocabulary … but sadly she has a bad case of the flu and was unable to do the post write up. But after a bit of fever induced texting I was able to interpret the first challenge of the season so no worries! If you can though – send some good and healing energy to Trish so she feels better sooner than later! (she’ll see your comments on the Project QUILTING Facebook page).
Before we begin, a reminder: please read through the rules – read all the way to the bottom of this post – and make sure you understand them. Feel free to ask questions, and we’ll do our best to answer quickly. Note that photography of your finished project must be linked at the bottom of this post in order to be eligible for prizes and for the Viewer’s Choice voting next week. (Maybe if you’re unsure about the posting this first time, don’t wait until the very last minute? THANKS!)
I just want to remind everyone that these challenges are meant to be inspirational and FUN! If you are feeling stressed just take a minute to look back at the “Words … “ post Trish did before Season 8. It’s a classic and should be revisited every once in awhile. Every week that you enter a piece for the challenge you are entered into a hat to win one of the amazing prizes from our sponsors! Be sure to check out THIS post for all the prizes up for grabs this weeks and to thank our awesome sponsors! Our Ultimate Weekly Sponsor this week is Cheryl Sleboda of Muppin.com. There will also be a special prize for the ‘Public Vote’ winner of the week. AND, if you finish the challenge in the time allotted your name will also be added into the final hat at the completion of the season for an opportunity to win the GRAND PRIZE! Inspiration, quilting, fun AND Prizes!? Can it get much better?
Challenge 9.1 The theme for the first challenge of season 9 is “Hometown Proud”.
The rules:
1. Be inspired by the best of you community – what makes your town special? We don’t care if it’s where you live or where you have lived. This part is open to interpretation but in the description of your quilt please included the name of the town and why you chose it.
2. Incomplete or unfinished does not qualify. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline (January 7 through January 14, 2018). Each piece must stand alone as DONE to count toward prizes.
3. Please remember that these projects need to be created during the week of the challenge(started on or after January 7, finished by January 14).
4. Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements:
- Include patchwork.
- Include appliqué.
- Have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.
5. Link up a blog post, instagram post, or public facebook post to the linky at the bottom of THIS PAGE by Sunday, January 14th, 2018, at noon CDT. Alternately, you may email the picture and description to {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line by 11am on Sunday, January 14. Yes – that deadline is one hour earlier, because it requires more work for Kim. Do not hesitate to email Kim – we do not want you to feel in anyway that you can’t join in because you can’t get the linky to work. Kim is more than happy to help!
When you create your PQ entry’s blog post or instagram or whatever you can to link up (you can link up a facebook photo BUT please make sure you set your photo so the public can view it), please include:
- a description of your creative process,
- the overall size of your project (it’s so hard to tell in a picture!)
- where you are (ie, I create in Madison, WI) and . If you decide to just directly upload your image to the link up party please email me this information so I can share it with everyone else.
6. The only thing you have to do to join in this challenge is LINK UP your finished quilt that you made within the week of the challenge! There is no form/email/etc necessary. This challenge is OPEN TO ALL!
- Please use the hashtags #pqSeason9 and/or #projectquilting when posting on social networking sites to help spread the word.
- Share progress pictures on Facebook, Instagram, and your blog – seeing your process and how you get to the final project is part of the fun!
- Make sure you like Project QUILTING on Facebook.
- We have created a ‘Challenge Quilts’ Facebook Group for you to share your thoughts, questions, and friendship on PQ and other quilting challenges. Just ask to join.
With that – good luck to everyone!
Please be sure to link up your FINAL project just below HERE. VERY IMPORTANT! If you do not link up you cannot win a prize!
An InLinkz Link-upThere are a few of us who can’t qualify for prizes but still want to share with you what we created for the Project QUILTING challenge. I’ve created a special link up for us! Not only will we be linking up here but if you didn’t finish the challenge in time you’re welcome to link up below so folks can see your finished project – whenever that may be!
Didn’t finish your quilt for Hometown Proud on time? That’s okay! You can’t win prizes but we still want to see what you did! Please link up your finish project below – anytime! This is going to be a never ending link up!

Hahahaha this is too funny! Hometown Proud is what I named my first Row by Row Experience quilt pattern for our local quilt shop about 4 years ago! Hmmm, what to do now for the challenge…. Thank you for organizing this – I may not do them all, but they are fun!

I enjoyed this challenge and hope to do at least a couple more. The variety of work and inspiration is mind-boggling.

Incredible group of quilts! It was hard picking just one because the quilts, workmanship and backstories are so amazing!!

Might be just a newbie question, is there going to be a listing of the top ten or what not? I think I've read all of them, but want to make sure I see all the winners 🙂
