Scrap Quilt Challenge–Let the Fun Begin

January 16, 2016 by persimondreams 2 Comments

I’ve mentioned before that I’m taking over the reigns of the Scrap Quilt Challenge previously run by the lovely Shannon of Fabrics N Quilts.  I love utilizing my scraps to make quilts full of fabulous, interesting fabrics all mixed together with lots of memories pieced in too!fabric scraps There are only a few changes to the challenge now that I’m taking over.  First – I’m not doing this alone.  The fantabulously “fun” Trisha Frankland of Quilt Chicken has agreed to help me in my duties of keeping this challenge going smoothly.  My family and I own and operate an apple orchard and it takes most of my time in September and October so Trish will be the one on call for sure at that time. She’s also around for other advice you need!  She’s great at color, pulling you back from your crazy, and coming up with names for pieces among many other things!  Thank you Trish for helping me out! Second – I’m giving everyone an extra few weeks to finish the challenge.  Usually the finished quilts are due in the middle of October.  Since I am in the midst of crazy apple season at that time I’ve decided to push the deadline back until the beginning of November when I’m at least slightly back to normal.  Third – you won’t have to post to the flickr group.  You will however have to Link Up your pictures of your projects to THIS main page.  If you’ve never linked up before no worries!  I have a post all ready for you on “How to Link up to a Link Up.”  Finished projects MUST be linked up by the deadline in order to qualify for the challegne. In the meantime … I’ll be bringing you inspiration at least once a month until the deadline!  I have a great line up of designers that will be sharing with you quilt block tutorials and/or tips and techniques for using up your scraps!  You can see the schedule HERE.  IMG_5156 I’m excited to be starting off the fun with two little tutorials.  I want to warn you right now.  There are no dimensions in these tutorials!  I give you ideas of basic shapes and the methods I use.  These are to encourage you to work with what you have and not worry about all the little things in between. I have tons and tons of scraps – and I love them all!  Typically, between Christmas and New Year’s I sort my scraps all into the proper color bin.  But there’s the time when they’re not all sorted that they’re just in random bins.  These are the scraps I’m using for this particular block.  IMG_5159 I posted a free (until February 15th) PDF tutorial on my craftsy page so that you can see the method I used to make this fun scrappy wonky house block.  I plan to make many more using this style and puttting them together in a quilt. IMG_5178 Since a bunch of houses can’t be alone to make a neighborhood – a scrappy wonky tree tutorial also seemed necessary.  I used the same random “shape not measured” tutorial method to make this tree block. IMG_5160 It’s a great opportunity to use up those fun triangles you all have from cutting off the corners of the flying geese and square in a square blocks you make! IMG_5176 Both of these tutorials will be FREE on my craftsy site for one month.  After that there will be a small fee to download the tutorial.

Looks like a year of fun ahead. Your house and tree blocks are sweet and will make a fun neighborhood on a quilt or maybe a small mug rug?
