16.1 – Mythical Creatures – Challenge 1 of Project QUILTING season 16

January 5, 2025 by persimondreams 6 Comments

Welcome friends, and hugs to you all – it’s been quite a year, and we could not be more excited about turning the calendar page to find that it’s once again Project Quilting season!

Since it’s a PQ-challenge Sunday, just a reminder you’re here today with Trish Frankland (aka QuiltChicken), We do this for every challenge: while this whole program is Kim’s creation, to maintain a bit of the mystery the challenge is a surprise for Kim, too.
Side Note about Prizes! One big change this season – no prizes. This year we’re going to focus on doing the quilt challenges for fun, inspiration and comradery!
We’ll get to know one another better throughout the season – so let’s get down to the task at hand, shall we?

PQ 16.1 Mythical Creatures

Around the globe – wherever people meet to share stories – you’ll find legends of mythical creatures. Tales of bloodsucking fiends, warnings of a boy who flew too close to the sun, and unconfirmed sightings of a thirty-point buck entertain us, bond us, and even teach a lesson.

And, while these stretch-of-the-imagination beings may not be real, they’re a huge part of our cultural landscape. You’ll find gargoyles in cathedral eves, gods and goddesses in public fountains, and an animated hero for kids of all ages.
This week, let’s find quilt inspiration in mythology. I am – once again – giving you creative permission to take that prompt in any direction you wish. Maybe a bag with mermaid-scale texture, a fire-breathing dragon quilt, or how about a horror-themed wall hanging for Halloween? Just follow our basic rules, found below!
We don’t have many rules, but please make sure you read through them and understand what’s going on. If you have questions, ask. Join the Challenge Quilts group on Facebook for a lot of encouragement and inspiration.
But most of all, have fun!

RULE ONE:  Find inspiration in a mythical creature.

You have one week to meet the challenge. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline – that is, started on or after January 5, 2025, and linked up by noon Central Time January 12, 2025.
Each piece must stand alone as DONE to count.
Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements: include patchwork, include appliqué, have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.

Incomplete or unfinished does not qualify. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline.

Link up at the bottom of THIS PAGE by Sunday, January 12th at noon CST (here’s a link to time zone converter to calculate for Central Standard Time: www.thetimezoneconverter.com)

  • Add to the linky the URL of your project’s blog post, public instagram picture, or public facebook posting.  This post – How to Link Up a Link Up may help  you. At this time, if you choose to link up to an instagram or facebook url you will have to manually upload the picture to go with it – look at the section “upload a link” on THIS POST to see how to do this.
  • Alternately, by 11am on Sunday, January 12th you may email a picture and description to {projectquilting@gmail.com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line. Yes – that deadline is one hour earlier because it requires more work for Kim.

Good luck, and remember to HAVE FUN! Don’t forget to post progress pictures because that’s part of the fun.

SOCIAL MEDIA LINKING

  • Please use the hashtags #pqSeason16 and/or #projectquilting when posting on social networking sites to help spread the word.
If you’d like to tag @PersimonDreams and @QuiltChicken on instagram then we’ll for sure see your posts!
  • Share progress pictures on Facebook, Instagram, and your blog – seeing your process and how you get to the final project is part of the fun!
  • Make sure you like Project QUILTING on Facebook.
  • We have created a ‘Challenge Quilts’ Facebook Group for you to share your thoughts, questions, and friendship on PQ and other quilting challenges.

Link Up

Please be sure to link up your FINAL project just below HERE. This is how I know how many folks actually participated and it keeps all the entries in one location so it’s easier for people to look through the entries. If you are having trouble linking up email me – projectquilting@gmail.com – the picture, story behind your quilt, and where you are from and I will do the rest for you.

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

I’ve looked forward to this year’s Challenge since the end of last year’s! So often I’m either creating postcards or working on Project Linus quilts and while both are creative endeavors, I yearn to use my time even more creatively, hence my joy in PQs!
