Clue 6 for the Sixth Annual Project QUILTING Mystery QAL

January 1, 2024 by persimondreams 4 Comments

Happy New Year! How are you feeling today? Ready to do some more sewing for the Sixth Annual Project QUILTING Mystery Quilt Along? Let’s go!

Clue 6 – Blocks 11 & 12

Cutting Block 11:

Fabric A:
(1) 7″ x 7″ square

Fabric B*:
(2) 1.25 ” x 9″ strip
(3) 1″ x 9″ strips

*Strip lengths may vary because of the slices you cut. Just make sure the strip length is slightly longer than the background fabric.

Making Block 11:

Cut two strips so they create a “V” type shape in Fabric A. Place two strips of Fabric B into the cuts. I chose to use two 1.25″ strips. Just make sure the strip length is slightly longer than the background fabric.

Sew the Fabric B strips into the Fabric A square. Press towards the Fabric B strips.

Make three more improv horizontal cuts in the block. Place three strips of Fabric B into the cuts. I chose to use three 1″ strips.

Sew the Fabric B strips into the Fabric A square. Press towards the Fabric B strips.

Square Block 11 to 6.5″ x 6.5″ square.

Cutting Block 12:

Fabric A:
(1) 7.5″ x 7.5″ square
(1) 1″ x 8.5″ strip

Fabric B:
(2) 1″ x 9″ strip
(2) 1.25″ x 9″ strips
(1) 1.5″ x 5″ strip

Making Block 12:

This might be the most complicated block for this mystery quilt along. I asked you to start with a slightly larger square of Fabric A to give you a little more wiggle room.

Cut Fabric A with four cuts. The image above has each cut labeled. Start by cutting ‘Cut 1’ and continue in order until you get to ‘Cut 4.’

Place four strips of Fabric B as indicate in the Diagram Above. Strip 1 is 1.25″ wide, Strip 2 is 1.5″ wide, Strip 3 is 1.25″ wide and Strip 4 is 1″ wide. Just make sure the strip length is slightly longer than the background fabric.

Sew the Strip B’s to Fabric A. Press towards Strip B. There will be four sections.

Make a diagonal Cut 5 crossing Strip 1. Place Strip 5 (1″) in the cut.

Sew the sections together. There will be Section W, Section X and Section YZ when this step is done.

If Strip B hangs over a section, trim the piece so there is a nice smooth connection before sewing it to another section.

Sew Section X to Section XYZ to create Section XYZ.

Sew the Section X to Section XYZ.

Trim the block up to 6.5″ x 6.5″ square.

Once you have your blocks finished please share a post on instagram with the hashtag #pqmysteryqal6 and/or in the Challenge Quilts facebook group. We want to see your progress! The seventh clue will be posted tomorrow at noon!

where did the thin strip of background come from after you inserted strip 1 into W. It is not in the first diagram of cuts! Was this an extra peice of A? Liz s

I used a 1″ strip. This is completely optional if you’d like to add it or not.

Wondering about Section W- there seems to be a strip of fabric A- how wide?
