Are you all ready for the second clue of Sixth Annual Project QUILTING Mystery Quilt Along ? Did Clue 1 go okay? Is the improv stressing you out or making you feel free? I understand either response. It might take awhile to let go and just let the improv happen but once you do you will feel great. Let’s keeping going and start working on Clue 2.
Clue 2 – Blocks 3 & 4
Cutting Block 3:
Fabric A:
(1) 7.5″ x 7.5″ square
Fabric B*:
(1) 1″ x 7″ strip
(1) 1.5″ x 8″ strip
(1) 1.5″ x 4″ strip
*Strip lengths may very because of the slices you cut. Just make sure the strip length is slightly longer than the background fabric.
Making Block 3:
Start by taking the 7.5″ square block and cut one random strip vertically. From the piece on the left, cut another random strip.
Place the 1.5″ x 4″ strip of Fabric B in the left cut.
For ease of instructions as we move further in this block, Section X and Section Y are as shown above.
Sew the Fabric B strip into Section X. Press towards Fabric B.
Trim the right side of Section X so there is a nice smooth connection with Section Y.
Cut a random diagonal block in Section Y. Place the 1.5″ x 8″ strip of Fabric B in the cut.
Sew the Fabric B strip into Section Y. Press towards Fabric B.
Make another cut so in Section Y so it crosses the first cut.
Place the 1″ x 7″ strip of Fabric B in the cut.
Sew the second Fabric B strip into Section Y. Press towards Fabric B.
Sew Section X to Section Y. Press towards Section X.
Square up Block 3 to 6.5″ x 6.5″ square.
Cutting Block 4:
Fabric A:
(1) 7″ x 7″ square
Fabric B:
(1) 1.25″ x 8″ strip
(1) 1.25″ x 5″ strip
(1) 1.5″ x 5″ strip
Making Block 4:
Start with your 7″ square of Fabric A. Cut what looks like a pointy flag into the square.
I started by cutting the strip on the left, then moved it aside. I cut a slice in the top and then one in the bottom to create a “flag” look.
Sew the 1.25″ x 8″ strip of Fabric B to the left most cut. Press towards Fabric B.
Sew the 1.25″ x 5″ strip of Fabric B into the top cut of the right fabric. Sew the 1.5″ x 5″ strip of Fabric B into the bottom cut. Press towards Fabric B. I also decided I liked my “V” notch rotated 180-degrees from my initial cut. I didn’t want it to end up really looking like a flag. The great thing about improv is you can change your mind at anytime and it still works!
Trim the left side of the right section so there is a nice smooth connection with the left.
Sew the two sides together.
Trim Block 4 to a 4.5″ x 6.5″ rectangle.
Once you have your blocks finished please share a post on instagram with the hashtag #pqmysteryqal6 and/or in the Challenge Quilts facebook group. We want to see your progress! The third clue will be posted tomorrow, Thursday, December 29th, at noon!
