This weeks Project QUILTING Challenge is a block I had never heard of before Trish put the challenge out. I had seen it before but I had no idea that it was named 54-40 or Fight.
This pattern is a mix on triangle in a squares and four patches. The triangle portion may be making some folks get a bit nervous so I’m here to share some resources for you to either
- learn how to make them
- realize you could have tools in your stash that will let you do this easily
- remind you that all these challenges are “INSPIRATIONS”.
Project QUILTING does not have any quilting police so do not let an intermediate block technique scare you away! We’re here to inspire, teach, and cheer you on.
Ok – first, here are some video’s and tutorials I found on how to make the block.
Make a 54-40 or Fight Block
- Teresa DownUnder YouTube Video – features freezer paper piecing
- Teresa DownUnder YouTbue Video – features freezer paper templates
- Missouri Star – 54-40 or Fight Freestyle Quilt Tutorial
- Sunrise Quilt Studio – Features Paper Piecing
- Just handson.tv – Features Tri-Recs Ruler
Tool in your Stash – Tri-Recs Ruler
I don’t know about you but I have quite the collections of rulers in my stash. Sometimes I find rulers I forget I even bought in the first place. One of the specialty rulers I have that I actaully use fairly often is the Tri-Recs Ruler (#ad). It’s a great way to cut your fabrics perfectly to create the triangle in a square blocks that are used in the 54-40 or Fight Block. Generation Quilt Patterns has a great tutorial on how to use the TriRecs ruler which you can find HERE. Perhaps you have a Tri-Recs Ruler in your ruler collection or head to your local quilt shop to add it to your tool box.
The Challenge is an Inspiration
You can take this block and make it your own … maybe it’s by making it improvisational, using the block as the quilting motif, or the story behind the block gave you a completely different idea for your piece. Don’t feel restricted and have fun!
We can’t wait to see what you all come up with for this weeks challenge! Let’s go!

I DO have that Tri-Recs ruler and haven’t tried it, yet! Thanks for all the resources and inspiration. I love a challenge that encourages me to try something I haven’t used or done before.

I’m studying all the videos. No sewing today, it’s football day. Thanks for another inspiring challenge.

Loved the freezer paper video by Theresa Down Under! I’ll need to “give it a go”. Hmmmm, maybe change a few angles? It’s always fun to play a little,
