Happy April everyone! I know it’s April 1st but this is no joke! Kim Niedzwiecki (aka Gigi of GoGo Kim) and I are getting together because we NEED each other’s help!
Our craft rooms are OUT OF CONTROL! They’re so out of control that it’s overwhelming and feels like it’s an impossible task. We decided to team up and take on a #CraftRoomOverhaul! It’s starting TODAY – April 1st! We’ve broken the whole process into chunks to help make the process less overwhelming. With all that said – we’d love for you to join us! Is your craft room in need of an overhaul? If the answer is yes, I hope you take this as a sign that it’s time for you to overhaul your craft room with us!
We have a simple assignment to start the #CraftRoomOverhaul! Share your current space! You can do this with a video or pictures – your choice.
- There will be no judgment!
- Don’t clean for your before photo – that would be cheating and we want to see and bond with you!
To prove that we’re serious about showing your space without cleaning first – here are my photos and you can watch my before video HERE.
Yes – I am super lucky – I have a huge area for sewing and creating. But that also means I have an extra HUGE mess! I plan on recruiting my kids and husband in this process. My kids will help with the sorting and my husband is going to help with any reorganizing/moving/building that needs to happen to make my space more efficient. You may have also noticed that while I have a lot of space – my area is not pretty. I work in a basement: the ceiling’s not finished, the walls are concrete, the walls aren’t finished, and the majority of my storage is upcycled. That’s ok. I know it’s amazing to look at the beautiful studios so many have but that’s not a reality for many, dare I say, most of us. And that’s ok. So, if you don’t want to share your space because it’s not pretty … just take another look at my pictures and remember … SPACE is just SPACE.
Okay – back to the plans!
Once you have your photos and/or video taken it will be time to make a plan of attack.
- Break the area into sections that need cleaning.
- If you have a smaller sewing area or many crafts (that all live in various area, this applies to you too!)
- Don’t be afraid to make a mess to get it clean. This will get very overwhelming. But the process will help to figure out what you have (will be like your birthday), if it is something that still interests you, and if it is worth keeping.
- Make Goals
- Start with an end in mind! It will help you get through the times when it looks worse on the road to getting better.
Kim and I will be sharing more tips on how to start sorting your piles and find great organizational tools throughout this week. Don’t feel like you have to do this all at once! Without getting into too many more details here’s a quick summary of the timeline for this Craft Room Overhaul.
Week 2: Notions!
Week 3: Books & Patterns
Week 4 – 6: Fabric (the BIG Dump) – scraps, yardage, non quilting cotton
Week 6: WIPs
Week 7: Back Together
*Note* Weeks may shift depending on how long each of these steps ACTUALLY take!
Each week we’ll have a special link up party with a specific assignment right here on my website so we can hold each other accountable through the process.

Thank you for sharing. I was thinking about all my pix…they are coming….it isn’t pretty. Hoping for some light bulb moments. Many brains, many ideas.

I really need this room to be organized. How can I be productive in this mess?? I can’t, I have taken work to a table in my basement for cutting. I have tried to figure out where to start. I am so glad you are figuring this out for me. I am really good at following instructions, so a big thank you for that !!!

My fabric stash is much smaller but I’m looking forward to finding better ways to organize.
Thanks for your bravery and creativity to present this Overhaul challenge.

I am following you. Really need to get this figured out. I share what use to be our den/office with spouse, so no pictures allowed. I have craft room also, but because I don’t do that as often as my quilting, it stays pretty “OK”. Lots of windows which I like for my sewing, but not much actual wall space. Afternoon sun has to be shut out so fabrics won’t ruin. 2 large interior window that look into our living room & dining room. Can’t cover them much. I am sure some of your ideas can be used, conformed to what I have. Thanks for sharing.
