When I saw that the Project QUILTING Challenge was Snail’s Trail I went right away to Pinterest to see what inspired me. I did need to keep this weeks challenge fairly quick and small-ish because I had a lot of other things on my to-do list.
As soon as I saw the cat version of the Snail’s Trail I knew that’s what I was going to make. It’s my daughter Capri’s birthday on the 24th (she’ll be 13!!!) and she recently got new kittens in the house. (We have an apple orchard so we have a lot of farm cats). She is so IN LOVE with her cats that I knew I could make a fun little quilt for her, aka them.
I wanted to make the cats look similar to our actual cats. Dili was easy – he’s an all black cat. Beau Nali was a little trickier – he’s a beautiful tiger. I had no fabric that really did him justice so I went with a bunch of different grey prints and made an abstract, patchwork Beau. Jinxi, our third addition is a orange kitten so I went with an orange fabric. Since this was for Capri I accented it with mint fabric because it’s her favorite color.
Because this was also for the cats I knew I had to make it interactive for them and added some fun pom pom trim I purchased from Sew Hungry Hippie. It’s the perfect finishing touch with a faced binding.
And even though this is a cat quilt I did quilt free motion basketballs in the background. If I knew how to quilt goats I would have done that too. Capri is a quiet kid who LOVES her goats, cats, and basketball (oh and winning). It was fun adding this extra special touch tot he quilt for her.
As a bonus – the cats loved the quilt! You can watch the video here I made for tiktok.
Finished Size: 22″ x 33″ (bigger than I hoped but I started out with too big of a four patch – oops)

I can see why you were looking for zebra fabric! The pom-pom trim is a perfect addition.

So many fun details incorporated into this quilt: fabric selections, FMQ basketballs, and the pom pom border–which I will be curious to see how long those pom poms stand up to the cats’ play!

I know! I knew I was sacrificing this quilt to the cats by adding the pompoms 😉 It’s worth the entertainment!
