Season 12 of Project QUILTING started last Sunday and finished quilts are due tomorrow, January 10th at noon. My friend Trish comes up with the challenges so I have minimal advantage on the challenges (I know a little bit earlier because I have to set up the blog posts). I love how each challenge really pushes me to make and finish something. I don’t know about you but in the extra time these last months I’ve had a mixture of ambition to get things done and the need to perfect the nap. The strange holidays definitely left me needing a good kick in the butt which Project QUILTING always gives me.
The challenge this week was Illuminating + Ultimate Gray. We were to be inspired by the Pantone colors of 2021 – yellow and gray. I pondered for quite awhile what to do and finally decided to make a super mini pineapple quilt with tons of pieces.
my original paper pieced pineapple block from the Mini Series Sew Along
At the beginning of the pandemic I participated in the Mini Series Sew Along with Giucy Giuce and Alison Glass. I decided I wanted to do one of those blocks again but by choosing where to put the yellows create a whole different look.
I colored the pattern so I could keep my layout straight and used this as I worked to keep me organized.
The only thing I’m not in love with about paper piecing is pealing off the papers! When they’re bigger pieces it’s not too bad but these tiny pieces get a bit tedious!
I decided to quilt this piece with 50wt Aurifil Thread by connecting the yellow points. I went around the swirl twice so it ended up creating a star design. I wanted something that looked good but didn’t take away from the tiny fabric pieces in the quilt.

Wow! The yellow spiral totally obliterated the fact that this was a Pineapple block for me. Your PQ12.1 mini turned out SEW cool!! Warm? Yellow is a warm color. Whatever… It’s AWESOME, Kim!!!

Wow! Great design and wonderful fabric choices! It really doesn’t look like a pineapple block until you look closer. Very interesting variation. Nice way to quilt it, too. As always, a piece for inspiration.

I didn’t even realize it was a pineapple block until you explained it. So beautiful and intriguing!

So many seams…I suspect there is more fabric on the back than on the front. I am in awe at your patience and persistence!!

I actually use an add-an-eighth ruler for this tiny of piecing so it’s about the same 😉

I love this for so many reasons, the intricacy, the brilliant yellow against the grey, but also how it is the exact same pieces as your original mini, but shows how key colour placement is to a design! Fantastic work, and thank you for doing this for so many of us.
