Happy Monday! I hope you’re as excited as I am to start the third annual Project QUILTING Mystery Quilt Along. This quilt along is meant to be fun, quick and simple to help get you in the Project QUILTING Spirit! It’s been a hit the last few years so I’m trying it again! I promise this year that you will actually make a mini quilt! If you follow the instructions it will end up being 24″ square!
We’re going to go over your fabric pull and the first clue today!
Fabric Pull
Here’s my fabric pull for this quilt along. You won’t need much – the largest size fabric you’ll need is a quarter yard. Below I’ll summarize how I chose which fabric and how much you’ll need.
Fabric 1 – black, at least a 10″ square. This is the center of your quilt. It can either shine or be a neutral that blends in the end.
Fabric 2 – Red Strawberries, at least a 10″ square. This should contrast with color 1.
Fabric 3 – Grunge Red, at least a 12″ square. This should either compliment or contrast color 2. Either choice will look cool but will create different results in the end. I chose to compliment.
Color 4 -Purple Cats, fat quarter. I decided to stick with warm colors for the main part of this quilt.
Color 4a – Fuchsia texture, at least a 10″ square. This is a nice highlight to color 4. This is an accent in the design.
Color 5 – a fun print with pink, cold, cream and black, fat quarter. I wanted something to compliment but pop for this part of the piece.
Color 5a – a pink ribbon print, fat quarter. This should highly fabric 5 to help accent it in the design.
Fabric 6 – yellow, at least 10″ square. I chose two different Island Batik yellows for this but one will work just fine. This should pop from fabric colors 2 through 5.
Fabric 7 – green geometric design, at lealeast 10″ square. This is a background so I want it to sort of be a neutral compared to the rest of the fabrics I’ve chosen.
Step 1
Cut
Fabric 1
(1) – 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangle
(2) – 1.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles
Fabric 6
(4) – 1.5″ squares
Layout
Layout the fabrics as shown in the picture above. You’re basically making a cross with Fabric 1 in the center and Fabric 2 in the corners.
Sew
Sew the 1.5″ squares of Fabric 2 to the short sides of the 1.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles of Fabric 1. Press towards Fabric 1.
Sew the three strips together. press towards the center Fabric 1 strip.
Just one of these units are needed. It should measure 4.5″ square at this point.
Stop back tomorrow at noon CST to see what clue 2 is!
