September 2020 Scrappy Apple Challenge

September 1, 2020 by persimondreams Leave a Comment

Happy September 1st and happy anniversary to my parents! I’m excited to announce the block theme for September – Apples! Many of you may not know but my family own and operates an apple orchard – Lapacek’s Orchard – in Poynette, WI. September is one of the busiest months for us and it just felt appropriate that this months scrappy block should be inspired by what is most on my mind right now – apples.

So, for this months Scrap Quilt Challenge let’s see your apple quilts!  Go traditional, nontraditional, pieced, paper pieced, appliqued, whatever you’d like!  All the specific rules of the challenge can be found by clicking HERE.

And since apples are such a huge part of my world, if you have an extra apple block you’d like to send my way so I can create the coolest, eclectic, scrappy orchard quilt ever I’d love that!  Just mail them to:

Apple Block Block

Feel free to use any apple block tutorial you would like or make up your own!

I have one I call the “Apple Flagstone” for a small price on etsy.

Here are a few other ones I found too.

  • Patchwork Apple Quilt Block from My Patchwork World
  • Apple Quilt Block Pattern from The Sewing Loft
  • Red Delicious Apple Quilt pattern from Sterling Quilt Company
  • Apple Orchard Quilt Pattern from Pen and Paper Patterns
  • A is for Apple from SewFreshQuilts

You can find adorable apple patterns in some books too.

Lori Holt has some great sampler books out there with adorable apple patterns in them. I’ve made blocks designed by her before and they’re super easy!  You can find apples in:

  • Farm Girl Vintage 2
  • Spelling Bee
  • Quilty Fun

Or even just make one scrappy quilt featuring a single apple like “The Big Juicy Apple” that Tamara Kate Designs created!

Get Started!

You have a year to start-and-finish a scrap quilt comprised mostly of apple blocks.  When you have a quilt finished (minimum size 45″ x 60″) link a picture below for a chance to win a prize. The deadline for the apple block quilt linked entries is September 15, 2021.

Share progress photos on instagram with hashtags #SQChallenge20 and #SQApple and/or in the Scrap Quilt Challenge Facebook Group.

Be sure to read through all the rules on the Scrap Quilt Challenge Page HERE before you get started.

If the idea of making an apple block quilt is making you panic please don’t!  Each of these challenges are supposed to fun and inspiring and to help you use up those scraps!  You DO NOT have to participate in each month!  Just choose the months that make you inspired and happy!

So … it turns out I can’t add anymore link ups at this time … I’ll see if I can find another option. In the meantime – get started on your Scrappy Apple Quilts and I’ll let you know when I can get another link up set up for them to be entered!  Good thing we have a over a year for the final due date!
