Happy July 1st everyone! Let’s make a pact that we would be ok if NOTHING EXCITING happens this month! Except perhaps in your quilting room. It’s hard for me to get sewing in during the summer months because I would rather be swimming so I made the theme for July super simple … if you want it to be.
Today I’m here with the next theme for the Scrap Quilt Challenge! All the specific rules of the challenge can be found by clicking HERE. This month (July 2020), I’m challenging you to be inspired by STRIPES! Feel free to interpret this however you please! Use a pattern or don’t! Below I’ll show you my plans for this month and also some other scrappy striped projects I have been working on.
Scrappy Stripe Blocks
My personal plan for this months scrap challenge is choosing two main colors – to start with (I can’t promise I’ll stick with just two colors for the whole thing). Because the fourth of July is just days away I thought I’d go with blue and red.
I went to my red and blue scrap bins and grabbed some fabric chunks and quickly cut them into scraps. Gudrun Erla’s Stripology ruler would make this super fast!
Next – I randomly grabbed the strips and sewed them together. The shortest strip in the group determined the length of my piecing. This is how I’m creating my stripes.
Once my stripe chunk was a decent size, I could square it up to whatever size I wanted. I’m guessing I’ll be making 6.5″ blocks and maybe some 12.5″ and 3.5″ ones too. We’ll see where this takes me! I’m also not worrying about keeping my stripes straight … there will definitely be some wonkiness in this!
As I was putting this together I realized I had some other fun examples to show you.
For a quilt I was making, I was setting the inner blocks in a wonky style. There were so many left over triangles from the trimmings I thought it would be fun to sew them together and make something from the scraps. This is where it is going and I’m loving the “stripes” that have been created.
These are bits of Liberty fabrics that were left over when I cut out dresden plates for my dresden neighborhood pattern. There’s no way I’m throwing any Liberty scraps out so I thought sewing them into stripes would be great.
Here are a couple of tutorials that I’ve created that would fit the stripe theme:
