Happy June everyone! I am at a loss for words as to what to say about what is happening in the US right now. At this time I’m simply trying to learn what I can, realizing I will never truly understand, and trying to teach my kids to be kind and open-minded.
Today I’m here with the next theme for the Scrap Quilt Challenge! All the specific rules of the challenge can be found by clicking HERE. This month (June 2020), I’m challenging you to be inspired by Trees! There are TONS of different ways to make trees and you can use ANY start block you want. In fact, feel free use to any and/or all of them! The scrappier the better! Below I’m sharing with you one of my favorite ways to make tree blocks.
A TriRecs Tree Block
The Tri-Recs Ruler is great for making trees. The block created with these two rulers reminds me of a great evergreen tree.
Here’s the initial pull of scraps I used for creating these blocks. Check out this tutorial on Generation Quilt Patterns website on how the TriRecs Ruler works.
Construction
Make Tri-Recs blocks. I used greens for the trees and light blue/whites for the backgrounds. I may go a little crazy with these and make trees of all colors and just make sure the backgrounds value is lighter.
The next step is to make stumps for your TriRecs Trees. To make these blocks into trees I took two strips of light green fabric and sewed a small strip of brown between them.
My largest TriRecs tree was 6.5″ so I made sure that my green-brown-green strip set was wider than that. From here I cut a variety of strips between 1.5″ and 2.5″ wide with the brown fabric centered. Then I trimmed the strip set down to 6.5″ or 4.0″ (for my smaller trees) to make the stumps.
I have a feeling that I’m going to be making many different types of scrappy tree blocks to complete this scrappy quilt but I do already have a good start with these TriRecs tree!
