Happy May Day everyone! When I was a kid we used to make a paper cone full of goodies, leave them at our neighbors’ doorstep, ring the doorbell and run away. It was one of my favorite days of the year! Now that we live in the country it doesn’t quite work as well. I think we might try to do it today though since the girls are a bit stir crazy.
Today I’m here with the next theme for the Scrap Quilt Challenge! All the specific rules of the challenge can be found by clicking HERE. This month (May 2020), I’m challenging you to be inspired by Stars! There are SO MANY tutorials out there for making star blocks! You can use ANY start block you want. In fact, feel free use to any and/or all of them! The scrappier the better! Below I’m sharing with you one of my favorite star blocks.
A Wonky Floating Star Block Tutorial
This is a zero stress block so have fun with it!
Cutting Instructions
Fabric A (background)
(8) 4.5″ squares
Fabric B (Star)
(1) 4.5″ squares
(8) scraps in a variety of sizes (this will make more sense as you follow along)
Construction
Layout your nine 4.5″ squares in a 3 x 3 grid.
Take one of the background squares and one of the star scrap fabrics. Sew on the long edge.
Place it so when you flip it it covers the corner. Press towards the star fabric.
Take another star scrap and place it so it covers an adjacent corner.
Now that you have this weird looking block trim it down to make it 4.5″ square again.
Repeat this with three more background blocks.
Lay out the blocks like this. Press towards the squares without added corners.
Before you know it you have a scrappy floating star block! This one measures 12″ finished.
