Every holiday season I try to come up with something fun and unique to make. This year, I took some old quilts that had been well loved but could no longer be salvaged as quilts and made them into something new – Christmas stockings!
I found a free DIY Christmas Stocking pattern on pinterest and it worked fabulously! You can find it HERE.
A few things I learned making these stockings.
- To avoid having to finish the edge of the cuff make sure you cut your cuff template right on the existing binding of the quilt your cutting from.
- These work best/easiest if the quilt is still fairly quilted and the batting isn’t all bunchy or missing in spots. I think this would be a lot trickier with a loose tie quilt.
- Using a denim needle for sewing through all these layers was super helpful. It took me a few broken needles to figure that one out.
- If there are parts of the cutter quilt that have torn out, you can always visibly mend that section. It will just add interest to the final stocking.
If you have no interest in trying to make these yourself … I have put mine for sale on my esty site. You can find them HERE.
