10th Birthday Mystery Quilt–Finished!

I’m excited to have a finish to share with you today!  I made this quilt top in 2016.  The pattern was a mystery quilt that celebrated my quilt guild’s 10th birthday!  I knew when I started that it would be a decent sized lap quilt and perfect for my daughter Capri.  I picked out colors that she likes – mint/aqua, red, orange and pink.  The pink background fabric is actually full of fairies which Capri loves. The mystery directions left us with a square quilt … which is fine … but I prefer my quilts to be rectangular.  I only added borders to the top and bottom. of the quilt.  To create continuity I bound the quilt in the same orange/yellow batik that I used in the top and bottom borders.  I feel like border technique was quite successful. Then – I dropped the quilt off at a local long arm quilter – Kim Van Etten.  She free motion quilts on her machine.  I just love what she did with this piece!I pretty much gave her no direction either.  I like to let whomever is quilting have the reigns and do what they are feeling instead of making them do something that they aren’t dreaming of.  The one thing I told her was that Capri liked tiny things.  Kim “hid” different things in the quilting – like the dragonfly above. And if you look closely here you can see a bee. And I just liked this because she quilted around the fairy to really emphasize her. This was technically my final finish of 2016 but the weather wasn’t cooperative enough for photo’s so it’s going to go down in the 2017 records.
