My (now grown up) son's and their wives decorate the Christmas cake on Christmas Eve. We have had Elvis Santa's and Game of Thrones banners from shareware, traditional it certainly isn't but they have been doing it since they were little.

I bake cookies, chocolate truffles and Italian sugar and almond candy to give to my son's school and some of my favorite people for the Christmas season. It started when my son was 1 or 2, I made cookies to thank everyone that was so loving and caring to my son. He really enjoyed visiting the library, bank, neighbors … and giving them something he helped making. Thanks for making me stop and reminisce, he's 17 now and we recently finished college applications, time flies way too fast. Merry! Merry! Toni Anne

Nuts & Bolts! Nowadays people call it Chex Mix but in our family this delicious concoction will always be called Nuts & Bolts. Although there are lots of real nuts in it, the original nuts were cherrios and the bolts were pretzels. I make 2 big roasters full every Christmas & send a tin full to my brothers & sisters.

when the kids were growing up we would spend days baking cookies to give away. We would all sit down and make a list of the recipients. Then we would all go and give the cookies away. The children loved it. Now our daughter is in CA and our son is married for the last year and we are all trying to find something special that we can still do. So it is up in the air right now, LOL

My favorite holiday tradition is to clean out the refrigerator (so there is room for all the cooking to come). We take everything, cook it up and then put it in packages and deliver to the homeless. The people on the street always appreciate having a warm, homecooked meal. We include paper plates, plastic silverware, napkins and condiments (that may or may not have been pilfered from a fast food restaurant!).

Only one tradition that we do every year, & it involves an "ornament". Our first Christmas together my husband brought home a headlight bulb from a van that had blown weird. They're usually clear, but when this one blew, the filament turned most of the glass white. I took it, twisted the wires into a hoop, put it on an ornament hook, & hung it front & center on our little tree. I still have it. It's always the last ornament on the tree, front & center every time. Thanks for the lovely giveaway.

I love to make chocolate covered peanuts. Just melt chocolate chips and almond bark and throw in a jar of peanuts. Put them by spoonfuls on a cookie sheet or waxed paper and voila!

So far we've had one son get married. His bride was thrilled to receive the gift of a "starter set" of Christmas ornaments. Email : mbttrfld4h (at) gmail.com

The cookies can get pretty elaborate, and I have a very large collection of cookie cutters. I started when my oldest was 3, and I still do it every year. One of our highlights! And, even better, the cookies are really yummy. We're always sad to see the end of them.

Each generation has its own types of foods to bring to the function, but when it comes to the goodies it is a free for all. Each year I try to bring something different for a "goodie" because that is the fun of it all. There are so many people, and it is so much fun to catch up with everyone 🙂

I take a variety of homemade fudges, divinity, cinnamon candy, Christmas Cookies and 2 Buttermilk pies to Christmas Dinner. This…is not negotiable, lol. I am also in charge of mashed potatoes and a thing called pink salad which is really just a cranberry salad but apparently NO ONE can make these things like i can. The candy and cookies used to be my favorite thing, but i am DYING to try something new. I am going to go rouge on them next year. Lol kwarren29@cox.net

"Normal" people out there probably call it Bing Cherry Jello Salad…. My family has always called it Coke Salad because you use Coca-Cola for the cold liquid (except I use Diet Dr. Pepper!).

I bake cookies for the people in our small town who help our family all through the year, such as our vet's office, the Post Office, the PUD, etc. It has become such a tradition since we moved here a dozen years ago that the year I didn't bake them because we didn't have an oven, I was repeatedly asked about them at the P.O., being greeted every time I walked through the door with, "Where are those (insert my last name here) cookies?" as if that was a real thing, similar to "Mrs. Fields". It was funny, but made me feel good–I was trying to show my appreciation, and they ended up showing me theirs.

Thank you for generating this inspiring collection of Christmas traditions! Our family has so many that evolve as our adult children have families of their own. Oldest of 9, I hosted after our Mom died. She always invited the homeless for Christmas. She'd play piano & we all sang carols. Now we sing The 12 Days of Christmas & Mick McGilligan's Ball. Gingerbread Cookies & breads decorated in all manner of figures by our artist daughter & her husband, the sculptor. Triple Chocolate biscotti & hot beverages as we open gifts. Our favorite parties are Cookie Painting hosted by our friend who bakes over 1000 cookies, a tradition started by her mother, and our neighbors' Carol sing with opera singers & piano played by a member of our local orchestra! Memorable times with Family & Friends! Often we wrap the decorated cookies in cellophane with a ribbon to give as gifts along with a cellophane bag of triple chocolate biscotti. My favorite ornaments are those my children made when young, those I received from past students, and a fabric ornament I received this month! We also hang the gingerbread Cookie stars and figures on the tree! I follow you & your exquisite work on IG and am so happy to have made your acquaintance! I think we wil be good friends!

We are a family FULL of traditions. Even new things we try somehow become traditions. My husband and daughter make homemade eggnog every year. Everyone has to open their stockings before any presents. Christmas Eve is the day we go to church and then have a huge soup and appetizer spread. My kids are now adults, so, they choose a signature drink. Decorations never go up until about 2 weeks before Christmas and must stay up through New Years. etc, etc. sjvonfumetti at yahoo dot com

We didn't have a lot of extra money when I was growing up, so my Mother always made Spicy Christmas Popcorn as a special treat at Christmas. It has chill powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and oregano in it and is delicious. I always made it for my kids when they were growing up, and we still make it every Christmas. Thanks!

As a child growing up in the 50s, the Sears catalog was a really big thing at Christmas. Among other items, I fantasized about the little gingerbread house kits that they sold. They weren't considered a necessity in my family so I never had one. As a young mother, I decided to remedy that situation by building a candy house from Better Homes and Gardens Christmas (the year was 1973 but the issue probably was from many years earlier). Their house was built of plywood (!!!!) and entirely frosted and candied. Being lazy and cheap, I substituted styrafoam and it worked perfectly. I kept that house for years and carried it on my lap when we moved across the state. When my children were old enough to participate, I built and frosted little houses for them and they applied the candy. We didn't do new ones every year because they would last for ages but we did them often. My daughter's birthday was in late November and we sometimes had a friend over to celebrate and they would make houses. We moved now and then and continued inviting friends to join us, scattering candy houses across the land. When we became the owners of the "most beautiful home ever", I built a replica and that house was used for several decades, getting fresh icing from time to time. Now I am continuing this tradition with my grandsons. I couldn't begin to count the number of houses made in states from Iowa to Maryland by many people all stemming from the longing of one silly little girl for a Sears catalog gingerbread house.

My husband's favorite grandmother used to bake insane amounts of cookies and send home every person in her family home with a tin of cookies. There were always at least ten to 15 different varieties. When my husband's grandmother passed away, I collected all of her cookie recipes. Now, I bake cookies (not nearly as many as she did) and I send them out to the family during the Christmas season. I know that mine are not the same, but I believe it keeps her spirit that much more alive in their hearts.

All of my Christmas ornaments are gift, souveniers or hand made so we love decorating the tree and remembering how each ornament came to us, the people we got them from, the vacation we took or just the fun I had making them. So of course decorating the tree and taking that "trip down memory lane" is my favorite part of Christmas. Swakins@aol.com

Also our tradition for the last 30 years is to have a family and friends holiday dinner about a week before Christmas. It is potluck, we rent a hall now, but we play games to win prizes. Everyone is waiting for this moment. We played bingo most of those years but last year I changed it to trivia so all of the little ones could fully participate. The prizes are a combination of handmade and store bought with no gift to be over $7. It is a blast and an event that everyone waits with anticipation for evey year.
