House Divided–Quilts for Scrap Lovers

November 5, 2016 by persimondreams 42 Comments

It’s finally my turn!  Have you been following along on the blog hop to see what all the different designers thought of Judy Gauthier’s new book “Quilts for Scrap Lovers”?

I have to say I LOVE this book!  Judy is so clever on how she organizes, cuts and pieces back together her scraps.  I’m by far an expert quilter and this just goes to prove it!  I started by just glancing through the book so I could figure out which project caught my fancy.  Let’s just say – there are THREE different house patterns in this book – I LOVE HOUSE BLOCKS!  (I’m trying to contain my capitalization usage but I just can’t help it).  My initial plan was to make a quilt top pieced with all three of the house blocks … and that may still happen but I have to admit I was completely hooked with the “House Divided” Pattern.

IMG_2934

It wasn’t long before I had six blocks made up … I definitely couldn’t stop there.

IMG_2949

I now have twelve blocks with no intention of stopping anytime soon!  It’s a fun pattern with clever cutting instructions that makes these great blocks AND uses up my scraps!  Now, as I cut fabric out for other projects I’m also cutting the size blocks I need to make more of these.  I can see this little project growing and growing and growing!

See what the other quilters thought of the book “Quilts for Scrap Lovers.”

I cut my scraps into squares, then use them as squares or make half square triangles. I just heard Judy speak. She is very clever. I love her quilts.

My scraps are out of control and I have just started thinking of scrappy quilt ideas. I have finished sewing together one scrappy quilt top. I sewed 2" strips end to end and made that into a quilt. I plan to embroidery flowers randomly all over the top.

I love scrappy quilts and have made a lot of them. My favorite block for this is pinwheel but if I happen to have a lot of scraps in contrasting color families I do love a scrappy log cabin! This book looks wonderfully inspiring with lots of new ideas and designs! Thanks! cotten.gloria@gmail.com

I have so many scraps that I'll never get them used and I just keep making more. I use as many as I can for HST's, nine patches and string quilts.

I've been trying to do that "cut them into 2.5" strips" thing so I can randomly make a strip quilt of some kind. I have not done so yet. Lol.

The last scrappy quilt I made was a 16-patch made of 2.5" squares.

Log cabins. I've made lots of them from scraps and I love that there are many options for the blocks and the layouts. No two log cabin quilts need to be alike! Judy's book has been on my wish list since I first saw it, love new sources of scrap quilt inspiration!

I am constructing two postage stamp quilts (which I love) and I have made several string quilts and several bar quilts which I love too. I have made some St. Louis 16 patch quilts from scraps and some patchwork quilts from scraps. Not sure which one I would call my go to scrap pattern because I love so many.

I don't really have a go to pattern. I do sew strips of random scraps together when I'm between projects – or putting off basting or binding (as that part isn't easy for me to do yet). Last year for the rainbow scrap challenge I made slab blocks of each color. Thanks for the chance!

I don't know that I have a go-to pattern. Mostly I look at patterns and think about whether they can accommodate scraps. Last year I made a crayon quilt out of scraps. The year before a star quilt. I've also made varying sized strips on the diagonal. Thank you for reviewing another great book.

As a descendant of pioneers in this area I was raised to never throw anything out. My scraps were used for applique when mending my children's clothes but now they are grown and gone. I would love this book for the inspiration to start making quilts for the grandchildren.

Since there are only so many quilts I can make in my lifetime, I try to make a new pattern each time. This goes for my scrap quilts as well. When I can't think straight, I will often take scraps not yet cut into various sizes for my bins, I will do improv slab blocks and then use those in different ways. nl@ridder.ca

I don't have a 'go to' pattern but I have go to blocks like 4-patches that I sew constantly and then look for quilts that use these blocks. So, this book could give me ideas for a new go to block to make as I sew other projects. sjvonfumetti at yahoo dot com

I've never made a scrappy quilt (unless you count the Splendid Sampler). Love how your House Divided is turning out. Does a fat quarter bundle count as scraps? I have one that has 19 FQs and I think this pattern would look great. Thanks for a chance for this book. grinnie1961 at gmail dot com
