Scraptastic Friday!

April 15, 2016 by persimondreams 2 Comments

Happy Friday everyone!  Today’s my birthday!!!!  I have a slightly different plan for the blog than the original one for today but it will still be scraptastically fun.  My guest blogger will be joining us on Sunday, April 17th now so today I’m going to show you some fabulous scrappy quilts I saw on my recent visit to the International Quilt Show in Chicago.  Hopefully this creates some sparks for your Scrap Quilt Challenge piece(s).  “Leap Forward at Age 60-Years Old (six-zero) Anniversary” by Naoko Hirano, Komaki, Japan “Leap Forward at Age 60-Years Old (six-zero) Anniversary” by Naoko Hirano, Komaki, Japan I love how this quilt utilizes yo-yo’s to create this image of a woman in motion.  Yo-Yo’s are a great way to use up your scraps too!  Just cut them into circles and start sewing! This is one of those projects that I cut out my circles at home.  Then I pack all my supplies – the circles of fabric, needle, thread, scissors and thimble into one convenient tote bag so I can take it along for handwork to do as I watch my girls in gymnastics, dance, basketball or softball.  (I have a similar bag backed for when I want to work on English Paper Piecing).  Big Bang” by Marlies Jannsen of Gieten, The Netherlands “Big Bang” by Marlies Jannsen of Gieten, The Netherlands Big Bang” by Marlies Jannsen of Gieten, The Netherlands This quilt was beautiful done using tiny bits of fabric from all parts of the rainbow.  Another great way to use your scraps!
“Heading West” by Jill Fisher from Iowa City, Iowa “Heading West” by Jill Fisher from Iowa City, Iowa I just love the mixture of tree blocks and log cabins in this quilt.  Mixing these two blocks make for a beautiful and intriguing scrappy quilt! “9229” by Nik-ki Whittingham of Chicago, Illinois “9229” by Nik-ki Whittingham of Chicago, Illinois Sometimes the simplest block (a nine patch) put together at different sizes and scales can create a dramatic, eye-catching quilt.  The quilt “9229” is no exception.  “Day and Night” by Joan Bratton of Woodridge, Illinois “Day and Night” by Joan Bratton of Woodridge, Illinois Improv piecing is always a great way to utilize your scraps!  If the improv piecing gets a bit wild for your taste, calm it down with some solid fabrics.  I just love what Joan Bratton did in her piece “Day and Night” photo’d above. All five of the quilts I shared above are drastically different styles of quilting … but they all have so much potential for scrap quilts!  I hope this helped inspire you a bit.  Stop back on Sunday and we’ll all find out what fun tips, tricks, and/or patterns Michele Foster of Quilting Gallery has to share with us! ~~~~
