WhatShadeRU Blog Hop–Cameo Flagstone Quilt + Giveaway

August 21, 2015 by persimondreams 143 Comments

When RJR Fabrics contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining in on the #whatshaderu blog hop with the Cotton Supreme Solids I was in immediately!  Take a quick minute to go and check out all the gorgeous color options in the Cotton Supreme Solid collection!  Definitely drool worthy!
I decided to have a quilt featured in August which is the beginning of apple season.  Of course – I had to go with an apple themed quilt!

My quilt ‘Cameo Flagstone’ all started with the inspiration of the ‘Apple Flagstone’ block I made for my 52 Twisted Traditions Quilt Along.  RJR Fabrics sent me a great miture of quarter yards of different greens, blues, browns, and reds to work with to make my apple quilt dream come true!  I mixed in some prints from my stash with the solids.
IMG_1636

I put all my slightly modified Apple Flagstone blocks together and then I turned the on point!  Yes – this was going to work!  I decided to create a horizon line in the corners of each strip on point.

Cameo Flagstone Quilt
I improvisational pieced together the fabrics to complete the quilt and I’m so happy with how it turned out!  I had to share this picture with our new orchard cat, Spiff just taking a stroll by as I photographed my new quilt.  I mixed in browns, greens, and blues into my sashing to create the look of branches … it’s abstract but still pretty cool.  I’m so happy with how my horizon line turned out!
Cameo Flagstone Quilt

My aunt, Barb Raisbeck, of Quilts by Barb did the quilting on this piece and it’s absolutely perfect!
I also had a great time mixing in some of the fabrics I purchased at quilt market from the sample sale – including ‘Picnic’ from Cotton N Steel which has a great apple print!  It was just perfect!  I fussy cut a bunch of them and used them in the cornerstones of the sashing.  Just a little bonus you get to see as you study this quilt.

And guess what!?  I get to share the goodies with you!

What is my favorite apple? That's a tough question since the grocery stores don't always label the variety. I know Golden Delicious is one of them and whatever kind is used in the Mrs. Smith's Dutch Apple Pie. When I was young, we used to pick our own apples at Eckert's Orchard in Grafton, Illinois. Whatever big red ones ripened in early fall are probably my all time favorite. We used to eat those and pick a bunch more to make applesauce.

We have 8 different varieties of apples in our orchard. Unfortunately, we had a late Mother's Day frost and that took care of all the blossoms for this year so I'm sad to say that there will be no fresh apple pies, no fresh apple sauce, no fresh apple eating–Honeycrisp is my favorite–no fresh apple cider, and no apple wine this year coming from our orchard.

My choice (the one we always get at the grocers) would be Braeburns. It's sad about loosing your Braeburn trees – must be very difficult when that happens – but also good to know they will return soon. Given they are unavailable this year, my second choice would be the Arlet (Swiss Gourmet!) variety – sounds go delicious. Thanks for the giveaway. ktsquiltdreams (at)gmail (dot)com

I have become absolutely enamored of the Honey Crisp apples. The perfect blend of Granny Smith type crispness and tartness and yet sweet to eat. Also think your quilt is wonderful. The picture of it outdoors really does convey the feeling of an apple tree.

My favourite apple is Ambrosia – discovered it a couple of years ago and it is grown here in British COlumbia. I have been thinking about you today because I know it is a busy time for apple growers – take care.
