It’s time to start something fun and that’s going to be the #scrappycrownalong on my blog! You can read all about the details HERE but basically we’ll be making different 30” blocks using a variety of combinations of 15”, 10” and 5” Crown of Thorn Blocks. You can purchase the tutorial for just $2.50 HERE if you’d like to join in on the fun!
Today’s layout is going to be the same block you see in my quilt along button!
To make this block – you need to make
- 2 – 15” Crown of Thorn Blocks
- 3 – 10” Crown of Thorn Blocks
- 6 – 5” Crown of Thorn Blocks
I used neutral scraps for my background fabrics and then a variety of medium to dark toned scraps for my crown and thorn portions of the block.
For this block you’ll sew the three 10” blocks in a row, then the six 5” blocks and finally two 15” blocks. Then sew these rows together – 10” to 5” to 15”. You’ll have your first fun scrappy 30” Crown of Thorns block all set!
I’m going to share a little short cut with you right off the bat. Those 5” crown of thorn blocks are a lot of teeny tiny piecing. I completely, 100% understand if you don’t want to deal with that. Instead of making those I’m going to give you an alternative.
You can make 5” half square triangles.
Supplies:
1 – 6” square of background fabric
1 – 6” square of thorn fabric
Directions:
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of your background fabric.
Place your background and thorn fabric right sides together. Sew a seam a quarter-inch on both sides of the line you drew.
Cut along the line you drew.
Press towards the darker fabric.
Square your half square triangles up to 5.5”. If you ever don’t feel like making the 5” Crown of Thorns blocks feel free to replace them with these 5” (finished) half square triangle blocks!
The first block is done! Now you can either keep on going or go with a mini quilt! Whatever you decide – I’d love to see what you did. Be sure to share a picture on the #scrappytripalong flickr group and/or hashtag it with #scrappycrownalong.
Don’t forget to grab a button and add it to your blog!
I’ll share with you another block layout on Thursday so stop back soon!
