Mini Charm Mix Blog Hop

December 22, 2014 by persimondreams 2 Comments

The Fat Quarter Shop was looking for bloggers to make the ‘Mini Charm Mix’ pattern and blog about it.  I love trying new things and playing with things I’m not used to – like a charm packs. I know it sounds shocking … but I don’t use precuts all that often … yardage is just so much easier to pet!  But – I’m always up to try something new – and I liked the look of the table runner. Fullscreen capture 12212014 95408 PMThe sample the Fat Quarter Shop made is using one White Bella Solids Charm Pack SKU# 9900PP-98 and three Lakeside Gatherings Mini Charm Packs.  I do really like the end modern-esque result of the white mixed some more muted colors.  Of course … since they used white for their charm pack selection … I would definitely have to try using some color! IMG_3953 To mix it up I chose to use a Metallic Stone Chips from Northcott charm pack and then the Modern Neutrals, Figures, and Persimmon mini charm packs. IMG_3956 The Northcott charm pack had more precuts than I needed so I decided to stick with a variegation of reds, golden yellows, greens and blues.  (I seriously love metallics in my fabrics – don’t you!?) IMG_3957 Which meant I pulled the neutrals and put them aside for a future project.  IMG_3960 And the tough thing for me is that I didn’t really know what I was all getting with the mini charms until I pulled them out and really looked at them.  Once I spread them out it was pretty easy to see that all the colors would blend fairly well together. IMG_3962 Instead of stressing out about which mini charm would go where … I just started by randomly sewing a charm to the ‘rail’ (you’ll see what I mean when you look at the pattern).  Once I had all those blocks complete I took the rest of the mini charm squares I had left and randomly sewed them up into pairs.  IMG_3964 The big thing I was worried about was that I wanted my metallic fabrics colors to change as you went across and diagonal across the quilt.  If you look at the picture above you’ll see that the upper left is reds, moving into golden yellows, then into greens, and finally, the lower right is blues.  The placement of my mini charm pairs didn’t matter to me at all which made sewing the top completely together much less stressful.  It was a fast, easy, fun, and stress-free project – which are really nice sometimes! Be sure to check out the video above to see the process and some tips from the Fat Quarter Shop to make piecing this fun table runner easy peasy!  IMG_6372 Once I had it pieced it as time to quilt the table runner!  IMG_6454 I decided to do a wavy cross hatching of the square and rectangle blocks.  I used the walking foot on my Bernina to do this and I just followed the pattern of the quilt to make it happen.  With so much going on with the colors in the quilt it needed some fairly simple quilting.IMG_6448And … voila!  Here is my finished Mini Charm Mix Table Runner.IMG_6458 I gifted this table runner to my godparents this past weekend and they absolutely loved it!  My godmother is a talented knitter and appreciates hand crafted items.  Every year I try to find something great to give her and every year she asks if I made it which I have to say ‘no’ to.  My husband pointed this out to me last year and so from now on my goal is to give her something that I can say ‘yes’ too!  Don’t forget!  The Fat Quarter Shop has made it super easy for you to join in the fun! With …

  • a Mini Charm Mix video
  • a Mini Charm Mix pattern
  • and a Mini Charm Mix Quilt Kit
