It’s time for the 36th Block of the ‘Twisted Traditional’ Quilt Along!

Mice Wheel Quilt Block Tutorial for

52 Twisted Traditional Block Quilt Along

Finished Block Size – 9” x 9”

By twisting the traditional block ‘Orion’s Wheel’ we can create a whimsical mice block.

Cutting Instructions

Mice (brown)

2 – 4” background blocks

Background (blue/green)

2 – 4” background blocks
8 – 3.5” x 2” background rectangles
Secondary Background (blues)
IMG_9519

20 – 2” squares (I used two fabrics. You could use one or 20 … completely up to you)

Directions

Half Square Triangle
IMG_9521

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the mice squares. Place these squares right sides together with your Background fabric squares.
IMG_9522
Stitch a quarter inch seam on both sides of the line you drew.
IMG_9523
Cut along the line you drew.
IMG_9525
Press toward the background fabric. Trim half square triangle (HST) blocks down to 3.5” squares.
Flying Geese Blocks
IMG_9526

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 2” secondary background squares. Place these right sides together on the background rectangles.
IMG_9527
Stitch right on the line you drew.
IMG_9528
Trim off the corners. Press toward the secondary fabric square.
IMG_9529
Place the other smaller square on the left side of the rectangle. The diagonal is in the opposite direction of that on the right side. Stitch along the line drawn. Trim off the excess triangle and press toward the secondary background print.
Make a total of 8 flying geese blocks.
IMG_9532
Take your 4 HSTs, 8 flying geese and 4 secondary background squares and lay them out as shown in the diagram above. Sew this 16 patch together and press so that seams ‘kiss’ and lay flat.

Here is your Mice Wheel so far! Now – let’s make those triangles look a little bit more like mice!
IMG_9546
Either with embroidery or a micron pen it’s time to add the mice eyes, noses, and tails.
I just drew mine on for now … I may go back later and embroider them … particularly the tails.

And with that…your ‘Mice Wheel’ block is finished!
Get your FREE printable PDF of this block by heading to my craftsy store.  Don’t wait too long…after a month (10/3), the PDF will be $1.
