Free Form Super Mini Spool Quilt

July 29, 2014 by persimondreams 2 Comments

This month’s Project QUILTING Off Season Challenge was ‘Independence”  One could interpret the word however they seemed fit. IMG_2014 I went the  ‘independence from traditional 1/4″ seams…or I guess…seams at all!’ route.  IMG_2015 This quilt is tiny!  it’s just a 13” square.  I had a lot going on this month but I really wanted to at least something for the challenge…so here’s what I did! IMG_2020 It used 100% scraps and even an ‘orphan block’ from my Michael Miller Modern Quilt Guild Challenge Quilt.  IMG_2021 I also attempted a faced binding because I wanted to see if I could do it before I tried it on a different quilt.  I thought it was ‘okay’ – not my favorite but can see why it would be useful at times. So…would you like a tutorial on how to do this?  I’m going to be putting one up to give folks some ideas for Fabric N Quilts Scrap Quilt challenge and it’s going to be a free form block.  Would you like a tutorial on either:

A.  raw edge free form

or

B. free form with nice seams.

Leave a comment below and let me know which you’d prefer!   Be sure to link up your ‘Independence’ quilts before the end of the day on Thursday.  Do that HERE.

I'd say, "Go the whole hog. In for a penny in for a pound", completely break out of the box and go for the raw edge free form.

Very cool! I love the loose threads of the raw edges really adding to the feel of a spool of thread.
