Once Upon a Time… Quilt Finish

June 27, 2014 by persimondreams 4 Comments

In 2013, I worked on both the Aurifil Designer Block of the Month and the Bungalow Quilting and Yarn’s 2013 Paper Piecing Fairy Tale Block of the Month Quilt Along.  I decided right away that I would work in the same fabrics for the blocks of both.  This way – when I was done, I could combine them all into one big, unique, fun quilt! 12 Aurifil blocks (including one completely hand stitched), 20 paper pieced fairy tale blocks (I decided to leave 2 out of the quilt), and a year and a half later – my quilt, “Once Upon a Time…” is finished! IMG_0514I sent my quilt top to Marcia Wachuta of Marcia’s Crafty Sewing and Quilting to quilt it with the instructions that I wanted ‘fairytale whimsy’ mixed with tradition.  I also wanted the words “Once Upon a Time” stitched into the top and the words “and they lived Happily Ever After” stitched into the bottom.  Let’s take a closer look at the magic she worked! fairy tale close upI love that the letters are really densely stitched and really pop out!  Feathers around the fairy tale characters.  IMG_0495-001 The upper right corner you can find the story of Snow White – with her seven dwarves and the witch.  (The witch has a cat of course…)IMG_0502Grandma’s HouseIMG_0503the Big Bad Wolf…this is the block that started it all!IMG_0504Watch out Little Red Riding Hood!IMG_0506The lower right is home to Goldilocks, the three bears, three bowls, three chairs, and three beds.  IMG_0519In the bottom you can also see the words “and they lived Happily Ever After”.  I’m so happy with how it turned out!IMG_0496 The 12 Aurifil blocks are in split between the upper right and lower left corners.  And with that – “Once Upon a Time…” is complete!  Now you can fill in the rest of the story! I have submitted this quilt to the Bad Ass Quilter AQS Quilt Exhibit for the Chattanooga show!  I’ll find out by the end of July if it gets accepted.  There’s still time to enter your ‘Bad Ass’ quilt too – below are the details! To submit a quilt to the BAQS AQS quilt Exhibit – Entries can be submitted starting on June 19, by emailing  photos and the quilt information to Melissa Winters at the AQS office,melissawinters@AQSquilt.com.  Submissions are open June 19th to July 8th.  Selections will be made and exhibitors notified with shipping details and directions by the end of July.
