In 2013, I worked on both the Aurifil Designer Block of the Month and the Bungalow Quilting and Yarn’s 2013 Paper Piecing Fairy Tale Block of the Month Quilt Along. I decided right away that I would work in the same fabrics for the blocks of both. This way – when I was done, I could combine them all into one big, unique, fun quilt! 12 Aurifil blocks (including one completely hand stitched), 20 paper pieced fairy tale blocks (I decided to leave 2 out of the quilt), and a year and a half later – my quilt, “Once Upon a Time…” is finished! I sent my quilt top to Marcia Wachuta of Marcia’s Crafty Sewing and Quilting to quilt it with the instructions that I wanted ‘fairytale whimsy’ mixed with tradition. I also wanted the words “Once Upon a Time” stitched into the top and the words “and they lived Happily Ever After” stitched into the bottom. Let’s take a closer look at the magic she worked! I love that the letters are really densely stitched and really pop out! Feathers around the fairy tale characters. The upper right corner you can find the story of Snow White – with her seven dwarves and the witch. (The witch has a cat of course…)Grandma’s Housethe Big Bad Wolf…this is the block that started it all!Watch out Little Red Riding Hood! The lower right is home to Goldilocks, the three bears, three bowls, three chairs, and three beds. In the bottom you can also see the words “and they lived Happily Ever After”. I’m so happy with how it turned out! The 12 Aurifil blocks are in split between the upper right and lower left corners. And with that – “Once Upon a Time…” is complete! Now you can fill in the rest of the story! I have submitted this quilt to the Bad Ass Quilter AQS Quilt Exhibit for the Chattanooga show! I’ll find out by the end of July if it gets accepted. There’s still time to enter your ‘Bad Ass’ quilt too – below are the details!
