It’s Wednesday! I’m super excited to welcome Colleen Yarnell of Lucky Duck Dreams as todays guest block designer for the 52 Twisted Traditional Block Quilt Along! Colleen has been a supporter of mine for a long time now and she’s an avid Project QUILTING Participant to boot. Be sure to check her out online:
Before we get to her ‘twisted block let’s learn a little more about Colleen through a mini interview!
What is your favorite thing about Quilt Alongs?
I love the challenge of quilt alongs! I sometimes get stuck and the structure of a quilt along allows me to play with fabric-pattern, scale and color. For the Twisted Traditional blocks I have been using only scraps in a bit of a crazy clashing mix of patterns and colors.
What type of quilter do you consider yourself – traditional, modern, contemporary, other…?
That is such a hard question. I definitely started out learning traditional techniques in the 1990s from an international online community. I was also learning the cutting edge at the time and using the most modern fabrics available. I dabbled in hand dying and screen printing and embellishment. And back then I loved quilting with pearl cottons. I stopped quilting for about 10 years. When I started up again 4 years ago the diversity of fabrics and colors was awesome! There is a large group of ‘Modern’ quilters and completely identified with. Funny thing is the wonkiness, simple patterns, and negative space was not so different from what I did in the 1990’s, just with better fabrics. So I guess I’m a Modern Traditionalist with a dash of Artsy fun. (LOVE this description)
What other quilt alongs are you participating in in 2014?
I’m trying not to participate in anything else because I have too many unfinished projects and tops that need quilting. I love to do the Project Quilting challenges if my work schedule allows. I often try to meld them with a sewing need to do double duty. I am involved in the Moderninstabee on instagram. If I didn’t work full time I have a feeling I’d participate in a lot more. As it is I’m really behind in the Twisted Traditional.
Apples or oranges?
Oranges but I try to do an apple a day 4-5 times a week. I believe they do help keep the doctor away.
Favorite Book:
Hardest question ever! I am an elementary librarian and I always carry a book to read! So I’ll say my two favorite juvenile novels no three no four that I read as a kid and still will reread on occasion. Which BTW make great read alouds too!
- 101 Dalmations by Dodie Smith
- James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
- Arabela’s Raven by Joan Aiken (whole series is great)
- The Saturdays by Elizabeth Ehnright (whole series is great)
Now let’s check out Colleen’s twisted block!
