Riley Blake Modern Quilt Guild Challenge–Quilt Finished

February 7, 2014 by persimondreams 8 Comments

It felt so good to put that final stitch into the binding!  My challenge quilt is FINISHED!  I tried to get some decent photo’s but it’s definitely hard to do in the winter time…with bigger quilts.  I ended up moving our futon and pinning the quilt to my curtains – actually worked out pretty decent.  Anyway – the big reveal…

Modern Log Cabin!  I am so super happy with how this turned out!

The center of each block is a piece of red Kona – to stick to the traditional rule of starting a log cabin with a red square.  I’ll be writing up a pattern for this quilt so you can find out how the rest of it went together (if you can’t figure it out from the pictures).  I’ve realized that I really love to mix tradition with modern.  A friend of mine calls herself a contemporary quilter…I think that might be the proper word for me.

Anyway – when I finished this quilt my ‘long’ arm was still covered in fabric scraps.  I quickly contacted my friend and talented free motion long arm quilter – Marcia Wachuta of Marcia’s Crafty Sewing & Quilting, to see if she could squeeze me in!  It was my lucky day!  She could squeeze me in!  So I sent it off and she did this amazing swirly quilting design on the quilt!

I was beyond happy when I opened my mail and saw the quilting!  It was absolutely perfect for this quilt!  I finished her off by binding her in two different shades of grey/black Kona.  They’re really similar and you may not notice it in the picture but you can tell if you look close.

I know I’ve said it before – but I love a challenge.  It inspires me to come up with something I never thought I’d put together…or finally put together that idea I’ve had but never had a reason to do.  Thanks to the Modern Quilt Guild and to Riley Blake for hosting this fun challenge!

That is amazing! So fun to look at! Love the circular quilting contrasting with the square piecing.

Wow! This quilt is so great. What a creative design with the log cabin. I just found you from Finish Friday, will follow. I am also a modern traditional quilter, I think.

Thank you so much! I love your 'I think' at the end. I'm pretty sure that is how I always define myself…with an 'I think' 🙂
