Over 40 incredible quilts were inspired by the Sweet Treat Project QUILTING Challenge which means if you add that number to the first two challenges – 129 quilts (and/or quilted projects) have been started and more importantly FINISHED as a result of Project QUILTING Challenges.  How cool is that!? Right now we’re taking the second closer look at eight more of the ‘Sweet Treat’ projects and learning more about which ‘sweet treat’ was each quilter’s inspiration.  Before Saturday night, be sure to head over to the Public Voting poll and cast your vote for your FOUR favorite quilts created!

Toblerone

For this week’s Project Quilting challenge, I decided to be inspired by one of my favorite chocolate candies, Toblerone! I used the Tipsy Triangles pattern out of Alexia Abegg’s Liberty Love book, and I thought it worked perfectly! This quilt definitely makes me want to eat some chocolate! It is a nice little lap or baby quilt, measuring 33"X34" and was made by yours truly in Duncannon, PA. My first original tote not only appliqué and used invisible thread in adding binding. What could be more delicious than a cupcake with pink frosting and candy hearts and a cherry on top. —

"Sweet Dreams Counting Sheep"

Made by Pam Geisel of For Quilts Sake in Yellow Springs, Ohio, February 2014 for Project Quilting Season 5, Challenge 3, "Sweet Treats" 19.25" x 16" It’s not obvious how this quilt fits the challenge. I was inspired by cotton candy and I was going to make the sheep with batting (like cotton candy) but when it came time to create the sheep, I decided to use a technique similar to what Diane Lapacek made for the Project Quilting Off Season Challenge: Happy Holidays in Dec. 2012. The sheep are made with small pieces of fabric folded over and stitched down for a 3D effect. The background is machine pieced 2" squares set on point, the grass is machine raw edge appliqued to the sky with yarn couched on the raw edge. The circles and fence are also machine raw edge appliqued to the background and the circles have yarn couched over the raw edge. The sheep were constructed separately then appliqued to the quilt with white sequins and black seed beads for eyes. It is machine quilted and the binding is a facing technique. More details at:

Here is my Challenge Candy project. I call it Queen of Hearts. I have had this fabric for some time and could never think of quite the right project, until now.
I made a quilt using this block, and thought the conversation hearts candy would make a cute gown. I quilted the square in a neutral color and added a purple binding, for color.

PQ is like a box of chocolates…

I combined this "sweet treat" challenge with the Madison Modern Quilt Guild’s February challenge – that one could only use the provided Indian cotton with gold embellishment, white fabrics, and could be no larger than 12" square. I was inspired by the luxurious boxes that hold fancy chocolates at Valentines. The gold football shapes were too far apart, so I hacked that fabric up, reassembled, hacked again and reassembled. The heart is faux trapunto’ed with high-loft batting, and the rest is tightly stippled, so the heart sits up puffy. The ribbon and bow embellishment are from the scrap bin. Size: 11" x 9.5"

My Inspiration for this quilt was my husband’s favorite candy bar. My design was inspired by the colors in the wrapper and the fact that I have a fair amount of this black fabric with random polka dots on it 🙂 I chose to applique the wonky star, rather than piece it because I wanted the points to pop over into the border. I also decided on making it into a pillow, because I love piecing quilts and have a pile of tops just sitting, waiting to become quilts, while I wait to overcome my fear of binding!
