Project QUILTING, Season 5: Challenge 2–Upcycled

January 19, 2014 by persimondreams 4 Comments

Happy Sunday everyone!  I hope you’re enjoying your weekend!  I spent most of yesterday sewing and playing euchre at night – a perfect day!  Today I’m going to be taking a milk painting class…I always love to learn new things.  While I’m there I’m sure my mind will be WORKING trying to figure out what to do for this Project QUILTING challenge.  It’s definitely going to be inspiring some creativity and thinking in us all!

I just want to remind everyone that these challenges are meant to be inspirational and FUN!  I know it can be stressful making a quilt in just a week but trust me – it can be done and it will be so nice to have COMPLETED a quilting project ALREADY in 2014!  Every week that you enter a piece for the challenge you are entered into a hat to win one of the amazing prizes from our sponsors!  On Monday, January 27th I will be posting the prizes and creating a poll.  There will also be a special prize for the ‘Public Vote’ winner of the week.   AND, if you finish the challenge in the time allotted your name will also be added into the final hat at the completion of the season for an opportunity to win the GRAND PRIZE!  Inspiration, quilting, fun AND Prizes!?  Can it get much better?  Before we get to the challenge – let’s see what our amazing sponsors have donated for this week!

PRIZES for Week 2

Each challenge that you complete a quilt for your name will be put into hat. One of my three beautiful girls will draw a name randomly for each prize.

A big HUGE thank you to our sponsors for all these donations – it helps add just a bit extra fun to each week!

The Challenge: Upcycled

Way back in Season 1 we did a recycled challenge. This week we’re calling it Upcycled and it has a new twist.

The Rules:

  1. The front, back, borders, binding and embellishments should all be made from materials that have had a previous life as something else.
  2. You may use new thread and batting.
  3. Your project must include at least 2 materials that were never intended for use in a quilt or clothing.

  • A pillowcase and embroidery piece technically qualify but we would like to encourage you to use materials that are not actually a fabric. That being said – it’s up to you how ‘outside the box’ you want to go on this challenge. Painting/stamping your piece is acceptable.

  1. Think outside the box here. In season 1, Kim cut up an oil painting. Truly Upcycled!
  2. Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements:

    1. Include patchwork.
    2. Include appliqué.
    3. Have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.

  3. Your project must have a name.
  4. Please remember that these projects need to be created during the week of the challenge.
  5. POST your entries with a description of your creative process, including where you are (ie, I create in Madison, WI) and the size of your project by Sunday, January 26th, 2014, at noon, CDT, to this flickr group, Project QUILTING with Persimon Dreams –OR email a picture/description of your completed project to {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line.

    • I would really love at least a short description with your flickr photo and not just a link to your blog.  I do ‘closer look’ posts and will feature each and every quilt made for the challenge on them.
    • Even if you jut do a short description and then end with… “Read more about how I made this quilt {blog adress}” that would be better than just a blog address.  I love to promote others so if you do have a blog include it and I will link up to you!

  6. There is now a ‘Challenge Quilts’ Facebook Group you can join in on to share your thoughts, questions, or whatever related to quilting challenges.  You can always post progress pictures there if you want too!
  7. Even if you’ve been participating for years… Please email Kim at {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line so that Kim can keep you updated on the behind the scenes going-ons and get all her records straight

Linky Party!

Add blog posts or flickr photo’s of your thought process/works in progress etc throughout the week to the linky party below!  Then we can all easily follow along with you!

With that – good luck to everyone!  Don’t forget – you can find Project QUILTING on Facebook too!

Have fun and don’t forget…

It’s Time to Think Outside the Square!

I am excited for this challenge! I only have four days to get it done-yikes. But I am excited to be able to use an embroidery piece that my mom made – over 50 years old!!

Great idea pam! And, Kim, my first thought was to do something with a painting……so now need to think a little more creatively 😉 Your's turned out great, btw!

Ok, I'm pretty bummed to not be able to use my new little stack of fabrics calling me, but I have a feeling this will be fun anyway!

You could still use a painting! I'll warn you though – trying to stitch through, canvas, primer and a who knows how many coats of paint is not a simple task! Can't wait to see what you come up with!
