Welcome back to another fun filled, inspiring season of Project QUILTING! I hope you are all as excited as I am to get started quilting and FINISHING too!
I just want to remind everyone that these challenges are meant to be inspirational and FUN! I know it can be stressful making a quilt in just a week but trust me – it can be done and it will be so nice to have COMPLETED a quilting project ALREADY in 2014! Every week that you enter a piece for the challenge you are entered into a hat to win one of the amazing prizes from our sponsors! On Monday, January 13th I will be posting the prizes and creating a poll. There will also be a special prize for the ‘Public Vote’ winner of the week. AND, if you finish the challenge in the time allotted your name will also be added into the final hat at the completion of the season for an opportunity to win the GRAND PRIZE! Inspiration, quilting, fun AND Prizes!? Can it get much better?
Anyway – before we get to the first challenge I would like to run through the list of prizes and sponsors for this week:
PRIZES for Week 1
Each challenge that you complete a quilt for your name will be put into hat. One of my three beautiful girls will draw a name randomly for each prize.

After all those amazing prizes offered from my incredible sponsors I’m sure you’re anxious to see what the first Project QUILTING challenge of Season 5 is. Well, I won’t make you wait any longer…
Project QUILTING Challenge: String Along With Me
- Make a quilt using strings. For the purpose of this challenge, strings will be defined as strips of fabric no more than 2½” wide.
- Your entire project must be made from strings. It is OK to cut strings into other shapes.
***The quilt back does not need to be made of strings and it is okay to foundation piece your strings.*** - Be creative! There are lots of string quilts out there. See if you can make something fresh and new!
- Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements:
- Include patchwork.
- Include appliqué.
- Have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.
- Rainbow String Quilt by Carla
- Your project must have a name.
- Please remember that these projects need to be created during the week of the challenge.
- POST your entries with a description of your creative process, including where you are (ie, I create in Madison, WI) and the size of your project by Sunday, January 12th, 2014, at noon, CDT, to this flickr group, Project QUILTING with Persimon Dreams –OR email a picture/description of your completed project to {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line. There is now a ‘Challenge Quilts’ Facebook Group you can join in on to share your thoughts, questions, or whatever related to quilting challenges. You can always post progress pictures there if you want too!

This looks like fun! Is there a minimum size requirement?
Kerry says
Quick question: I know the post says the entire project must be made of strings. Does that include the backing for the project?
Kim says
Yay! I've been posting about it on Facebook / my business page and have recruited a few friends – – – and just did my first "in progress" blog post! Can you tell I was EXCITED to start this challenge??? (and putting off the "real" work!)
PersimonDreams says
Nope! The backing doesn't need to be made of strings 🙂
PersimonDreams says
No size requirements at all – whatever you think you can handle in just one week!

I had an epiphany in the night and got up eager to work on my challenge! First I had to get homeschooling the Boybarian out of the way and then I got down to the Sewing Dungeon and cut my strings for part one of my inspiration! Hopefully this afternoon will be very productive as later in the week I know I won't have as much time to do much construction … I'll need my limited minutes to quilt and bind 🙂

Just a clarification on the project content. Strings is the theme so does that mean every inch has to be made of strings (besides the backing) or are strings the main motif or they have to be the majority of the project. For example I'm thinking handles and bottom of a bag or borders on a quilt. Thanks!
PersimonDreams says
Thanks for your question Handles and bottom of a bag would not have to be strings. The borders on a quilt would have to be strings since it's part of the main quilt.

Kim, I know it's not like me to do something so small but…my pouch is very useful! KP
