Because I’m always looking for fun things to do, sew and participate in I signed up for the recent Mug Rug Swap hosted by Michelle of the Quilting Gallery.
It was quite fun to come up with mug rugs for my ‘partner’ although a bit stressful I must admit. The quilting level of my partener was ‘expert’ so it made me a bit more stressed out about making it completely perfect. And the only fabric requirement was no white (I did use a little for the eyes and snow) and that she liked Moda Fabrics. I also have to admit I’m really terrible and knowing which designer designed my fabric and where it came from. I’m a completely ‘do I feel it in my gut’ fabric buyer. Also – correct me if I’m wrong – there’s quite a variety of ‘styles’ in Moda fabrics…it was definitely something I contemplated for awhile. In the end I made her ‘Kim Style’ mug rugs. There is at least a little bit of Moda Fabric on them… For the swap we made two mug rugs – each tutorial from The Patchsmith. Above is my version of ‘Two Owls.
And here is my version of Winter Birdhouse. I was trying to do some decorative stitching under the bird but it just wasn’t looking right – so I added a bit of fun owl printed cotton tape that not only covered it up but also add a bit of extra whimsy.
I haven’t heard from my partner yet but hopefully she likes her little mug rugs.
Be sure you check out all the beautiful mug rugs made by looking at the Flickr group.
Dreaming of Spring Mini Quilt Swap
Registration for Quilting Gallery’s next swap, Dreaming of Spring Mini Quilt Swap, ends on Monday. Be sure you don’t miss your chance to join in the fun!
They turned out beautiful Kim.
They're both really wonderful and I'm sure they'll be loved. I'm with you though…swaps cause more stress than anything!
Thanks so much! They are stressful but I am hoping it's good for me and maybe get me more into feeling comfortable doing custom orders… we'll see…
Thanks Mishka! And thanks for organizing it! I did have fun once I decided what I was going to do with my fabrics 🙂
