The Challenge – Annie’s Vision
- Your inspiration is the art of Annie Young. Explore the colors, the textures, the style, the subject matter, the feelings….. Choose what speaks most to you and use it to make your quilt. Look over her blog: http://www.annieyoungarts.blogspot.com/ to see her work.
- Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements: (1) Include patchwork, (2) include appliqué, and/or (3) have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.
- Your project must have a name.
- Please remember that these projects need to be created during the week of the challenge.
- POST your entries with a description of your creative process, including where you are (ie, I create in Madison, WI) and the size of your project by Sunday, February 10th, 2013, by 12:05 PM, CDT, to this flickr group, Project QUILTING with Persimon Dreams –OR email a picture/description of your completed project to {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line.
If you wish to receive critiques on your piece – the good and critical – please add your photo’s to this group as well: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1628629@N24/
Are you stuck? Need a little ‘Tim Gunn’ advice during the week? Or are you just so excited on how things are going along and what to share your WIP? We have a group for that!http://www.flickr.com/groups/1430386@N24/
If this is the first Project Quilting challenge you’ve participated in, please email Kim at {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line. Please include your name, flickr name, email and a website if you have one.
To help you find some inspiration for this piece I did a little interview with Annie Young so we can learn more about her, her work and her inspiration.
When did you first start creating?
I was very young…I liked to do many things, cook, sew (I made many of my own clothes) collect odd things and make into jewelry or collection containers…I also would rake leaves into floor plans and showing my dad my master plans!
How did your creative process evolve through life?
As I grew brave the bigger the ideas and more costlier projects!
What inspires your work?
Nature, faith, interactions with others, memories…smells
How/When did you realize that your handicap wasn’t going to hold you back from creating beautiful works that inspire people?
It was about a year or so after I was getting used to my vision loss and my close friend helped me to find my way back to my studio.
How do you decide on your colors?
I have long conversations with those who are with me when picking out colors for the specific projects…sometimes it is pure luck (lol)
Do you have a favorite color to use?
It used to be orange, now I think I have been using a great deal of purple
Where can we go to see your work?
I exhibit a great deal in the MPLS area of MN. I am a RAW artist and looking forward to showing my work thru out the major cities in the country.
Anything else you’d like to share:
It is my hope that my work directs others to walk into yes and experience the possibilities life offers…
