Project QUILTING Off Season Non-Quilt Challenge Creations

August 2, 2011 by persimondreams 3 Comments

Project QUILTING Off Season Non-Quilt Quilt ChallengeHappy  Monday everyone!  I’ve been trying to find some time to sit down and put this post up for well over 24 hours now.  The summertime, pre-apple season craziness is definitely starting to kick into overdrive. Anyway, I am happy to share with you four great non-quilt quilted pieces that were created for the latest Project QUILTING challenge from FabricFascination.
Let’s take a closer look at the projects:

Quilter:  FabricFascination or Kimbuktu

The Story:

For my non quilt quilted item I made a Christmas stocking. This also met my Christmas in July goal. The stocking is double sided. One side has just two fabrics from Jason Yenter’s Wintergraphix line. The other side has eight fabrics cut into small triangles. Both sides are stippled. For my non fabric items I added beading and a Christmas gold and green floral pick.

Hugs & Kisses Upcycled Tie Purse

Hugs & Kisses Upcycled Tie Purse

Made by Pam Geisel of For Quilts Sake in Yellow Springs, Ohio, July 2011 for Project Quilting Off Season, Challenge 4, The Non-Quilt Quilt Outside dimensions: 6” high x 3” wide
Inside dimensions: 5” high x 2” wide x 1” deep
Strap: 38" long total (shoulder to purse 19" drop) My creative process and how I made it: This was a challenge for me as I haven’t made anything three dimensional before because it intimidates me. I knew right away what I wanted to do for this challenge, something I’ve been wanting to try for over a year now, it just hasn’t made it to the top of the “to do” list, so this was the push that I needed to get it done. Last summer I made a wall hanging using men’s ties and shortly after that I came upon several really fun, colorful ties made with beautiful silk fabrics and the idea of making a single tie into a purse intrigued me. It already had interfacing in it so I wouldn’t have to figure out how to do that, and the underside of the widest part already had a lining, so I wouldn’t need to add that either. It’s not a big purse but I’m not the sort that carries a purse so this would be nice for when I just need to take along a cell phone or keys and lip balm. It took some trial and error (yes, there were some ugly ties harmed in the making of this purse) but persistence paid off and I came up with a pattern that I liked. The two non-fabric items/textures are a Velcro closer and a round, red button for decoration. This was part of the “Save the Children” collection and this fabric, called “Tic Tac Tie” was designed by Alec who was 8 years old at the time.

I started with a bunch of assorted scraps of quilted rectangles and strips. I stitched them together and zig zagged the raw edges to finish the seams. I stitched enough of them together to make a rectangle that measured 27" X 35". Then I turned it into a bag. Here’s the Turn a Quilt into a Bag Post. I will use my Hodgepodge Patchwork Bag for packing our dry food to go to our camper.
The items that are not fabric, but add texture, are the three crocheted doilies. The larger one, I made into a pocket for my notepad and pencil. You have to have that along to write the shopping list for the next weekend.
I am a saver. I love to find uses for discarded fabrics and discarded clothes. About 6 years ago I started making quilted tote bags from fabric that I quilted on my long arm machine. I even taught classes at a local craft shop. When I would cut the kits from the quilted fabric there was always scraps and strips leftover. I put them all into a big tote and saved them. I am glad I did! They were perfect for this dimensional quilt challenge. The tote is still pretty full. I’ll bet, I can make at least 2 more Patchwork Bags!
Thanks again to Project Quilting for inspiring me to create!

Quilted Diaper Cover for the Project QUILTING Non-Quilt Challenge

The Story:

As soon as I saw the non-quilt challenge I knew I was going to try to make a quilted diaper cover. I used a knit one that I have as my pattern and went from there. It ended up being a little small since the knit one was stretchy and the quilted one is not but I still think it’s cute. I used Rainy Days and Monday fabric and my two ‘other’ elements are the big yellow button and the hair ties to keep the cover on. Created by Kim Lapacek

PRIZE TIME!

An added bonus was included in this challenge for all those that participated.  Everyone that entered a piece was eligible to win a bundle of christmas fat quarters from FabricFascination.  I put the number 3 into random.org and here was the results: giveawayCongratulations to ForQuiltsSake for winning some fabulous new fabric for your stash! Thanks again to Kym for giving us a great challenge and for adding a fun prize to the pot!
