I know when I was pregnant I was always stressed about one thing: “What was I going to name my baby?!?” My husband thought I was crazy because I would literally be up until all hours of the night searching through multiple baby name books…which is a little nuts since they all pretty much have the same names.
Part of my problem was that my name had to be unique but not too weird. Now, I have thirty+ cousins and they all have kids too. Add aunts, uncles, friends, kids you went to school with, and neighbors and you have quite a few names out of the mix. Then, you do have to take into account your husband’s opinion…at least a little. (although I did find that after he saw me go through labor he pretty much agreed with anything I said for the following day or so…)
Although I like being different I have always liked the name Grace, which happens to be BOTH of my Grandmother’s names. So, of course Gracie was on the list…but, it seems that there are TONS of Grace’s now a days. I still love the name but it had become just too common for me to use.
I was on bed rest for about 2 weeks before I had Cedi because of some high blood pressure issues. We don’t have cable. I had to watch day time TV for two weeks because of lack of anything else to do. On the TYRA show one day, a model came out and her name was Mercedes…got me thinking…
Here’s the list we went to the hospital with (we also brought our name books along):
Gracie, Sadie, Olivia, Emma, Madeline (Maddy) and if she surprised us and was a boy: (Charlie, Oliver, Sawyer, Frank)
After I had Cedi, the first words out of my mouth were: “Holy F*&%&$&&* I just had a baby!” then I said, “Sorry…” and then I said, “Frank, get the book!” He calmed me down and said maybe we could wait a little bit while the doctors and nurses cleaned everything up – me the baby.
So, we let things calm down and then we started to call our baby different names. We finally decided to name her, Mercedi Rose. We feel that if she wants to be a little different and out there like me she can go by Mercedi and if she wants to be more normal and streamlined she can have people call her Cedi. She’s probably going to be annoyed at us forever because of the weird spelling but I think the name fits her perfectly!
cute story. 🙂
I personally love unusual spellings! Of course-I just met the first Onna (besides myself) and I have always liked that it was different! I love the name!

Awww, what a cute story.
I could talk baby names all day, ever day. Love this topic!
