An Interview with Karma Lapacek…Creator of 'True Lover's Knot'

I was lucky enough to marry into an incredibly talented family. I’ve shown off my mother-in-law’s work and today I want to shop off one of the quilts my sister-in-law put together…the True Lover’s Knot. This fabric is absolutely stunning. Karma chose an amazing swirly, colorful patterned commercial fabric and then accented it with fabric that her mom hand-dyed. The end result is absolutely stunning. I secretly wish this was mine, but luckily for you…it’s for sale!

Now I’m going to share Karma’s story with you!
Tell me a little bit about your background in arts and crafts.
My mom has crafted and quilted since I can remember. Growing up she always had a project to be working on while she watched TV or if she had a few extra minutes. I guess most of my background comes from her. In college I did take Art 101 but don’t ask me what I learned…

When did you first start creating things?
I made my first quilt when I was 12. I’m sure I did little things before that but I really dont remember anything in particular.

Is this your only business or do you do other things as well?
I’m a physical therapist and work full-time at a wonderful retirement community. My favorite part of my job is making people feel better but a bonus is getting to see old hand-made items patients have in their homes. One of my patients has always loved to quilt. She is now blind but she still continues to quilt with scraps that her daughter sorts into matching categories (i.e. pastels, brights, etc).

Do you still dream about making other things? If so, what?
Not really… I like seeing what other people create and sometimes get little ideas, but I haven’t had a “spark” for a project in a while.

Any words of advice to others?
A seam ripper and patience is necessary to quilt. 🙂 Honestly, I really do not think I would be able to quilt the way I do if it wasn’t for my mom, so if you’re interested in learning/refining your skills you should consider attending the retreat my Aunt and mom hold annually.
