The Fat Quarter Shop is launching the “Bella Skill Builder” today!
I’m super excited to be quilting along on this skill builder with the Fat Quarter Shop. For the next 9 months a new block(s) will be revealed on the first of the month. You’ll get to see how different designers are using their choice of Bella Solids to make this stunning quilt!
This is exactly the kind of quilt I love making – a sampler! This one is unique too as there are a lot of different rulers (or templates if you don’t want to buy the rulers) needed to make these blocks. This is going to be a challenge for me – I’m really going to have to pay attention to my 1/4-inch seams.
But you all know how much I LOVE a challenge and I’m definitely ready for this one!
We were sent a supply list to make the quilt. Instead of following that though … I just purchased a whole bunch of random Bella Solid Fat Quarter Bundles. My quilt is going to look crazy scrappy if the plan in my mind works out!
PS – anytime you shop at the Fat Quarter Shop be sure to stop by the 24-Hour Flash Sale before you checkout – you never know what extra goodie you may find at a great deal!
Here’s a shot of all the different fabrics that came with the bundles! This is going to be insane!
The next step for me to get started was to sort all these fat quarters by
and dark colors. Even now looking at these photo’s I don’ that values all “perfect” but this quick sort is enough to get me started.
The first block was the Kaleidoscope. This block uses the Spiderweb Ruler but you can use the templates that are included with the pattern too. These were my first blocks I’ve ever made using a spiderweb ruler! It’s just crazy to me how the ruler really does help you cut the fabric just perfectly!
You will be making 3 blocks this month …
1A … my intersection wasn’t quite perfect but definitely close enough to make me happy.
and then two 1Bs. The two blocks are essentially the same just at different scales!
The only bad thing about making three blocks is trying to take a descent picture that shows them all! I think I did okay “making it work” on a spot in my living room!
And let’s do a quick value check since I’m doing this so scrappy! To do this I just edited my photo into black and white. Looks pretty darn good to me!
Stop back again on March 1st to see the next blocks!
In the meantime – head over to the Fat Quarter Shop’s blog to see how you can join in this quilt along fun!

Your blocks look great! I like your idea of using all the different colors, this will be fun to watch!

Your colors will make the blocks pop! Love them! I went with a more muted palette but will have to try brighter colors as we sew along. May be making more then one quilt!

You mention you received a supplies list for the total quilt. I can not find such a list posted anywhere and many of us would really like to have one before starting the quilt. So far many have commented on the official blog and they have not responded. Do you know how we can obtain the list you were sent?
