11. Diamonds in the Rough
This next sashing for the Home Sweet Home Quilt Along Quilt was done using the Tri Recs Ruler which can either be purchased at your Local Quilt Shop (LQS) or you can order it online from one of my fabulous sponsors – the Fat Quarter Shop.
I will be using this ruler for a couple of the sashings I put into this quilt.
Fabric Requirements
Diamonds: 4 – 3.5” squares
Backgrounds: 4 rectangles 3.5” x 5” rectangles of different background fabrics
Cutting & Piecing
Using the Tri Tool Triangle cut four triangles out of your Diamond fabric using the 3.5-inch line as the guide. You can layer the fabric so you can cut two of these triangles at a time.
Next, fold your background fabric in half so that edges match really nice.
Now, lay out your Recs Tool 1/2 Triangle on the 3.5-inch line to cut out two right angle triangles.
By folding the fabric in half you get the triangles cut in the two ways necessary without having to flip your ruler and cutting two separate times. Layout your ‘diamond’ fabric with the background fabric so it looks like the picture above. Lay your fabrics right sides together so it looks like the picture above. Stitch a 1/4-inch seam and iron towards the smaller triangle. Your piece should look like the picture above so far. Now, lay the other smaller triangle on the other diagonal edge. Sew a 1/4-inch seam on the other side of the triangle and iron towards the smaller side. Repeat this with the other three triangles. You will have four 3.5-inch blocks at this point.
Sew the four squares together to form three diamonds with your main fabric. You know have another 3.5” x 12.5” sashing.
