Quilt Block Refresh!

August 14, 2025 by persimondreams Leave a Comment

In 2014, I twisted a traditional quilt block in an untraditional way for an entire year. It was a huge challenge that really made me stretch my imagination. I came up with the idea and posted it before I really thought it through. It was easy-peasy for about eight weeks … the forty-four remaining weeks were a bit more challenge – oops! It was the challenge that inspired me to come up with my Dresden Neighborhood pattern so it was a win at the very least for that! I did come up with some other great block tutorials along the way though and I thought during this busy apple season it would be fun to revisit some of these blocks in a bit of a more “2025” vibe.

Let’s take a look at a few blocks I’ve already done!

Wyoming Dragonfly

I made four of the Wyoming Dragonfly blocks. The tutorial is for six-inch finished blocks.

I put all the blocks together to create the effect of swirling dragonflies and added a border. to finish it off. I plan on hand quilting this and making it into either a wall hanging or pillow … we’ll see what happens!

Weathervane Neighborhood Block

I love a good house block! The twist to make the Weathervane block into houses just brings me joy. I used scraps from Fableism fabrics that I’m using for Capri’s quilt for the main houses and I love the classic look it creates!

These next two blocks were not part of the “Twisted Tradition” quilt along but are twists on traditional blocks.

Modern Log Cabin Block

I’m pulling out one of my favorite original blocks and making another WHOLE quilt with them! *see the first quilt HERE* At this point, I’m pretty sure this is going to a future graduate but sometimes quilts change their mind as they’re being made so that might change. Either way – I’m doing it and having fun along the way! My main three colors are going to be pink, beige and an ombre golden brown. Pops of color will find their way in with the accent logs.

Strippy Spool Block

Thread blocks are my favorite! I came up with a fun little twist to this strippy spool that I share in my tutorial. This block will be 12″ finished and I’m debating making 12 more blocks in rainbow-esque colors that are 6″ finished and can go around this one. We’ll see what happens though … it just might be this one and I add a border to make a pillow.

I have other projects I’m working on too but these were the block focused ones. If you want to see what I’m up to be sure to follow along on instagram!
