12.1 – Illuminating + Ultimate Gray – Challenge 1 of Project QUILTING Season 12

January 3, 2021 by persimondreams 10 Comments

Hi gang – welcome to a fresh, new season of Project Quilting. I’m excited to see old friends again (virtually) and I’m thrilled to welcome new friends to the fold. Welcome all!
Before I get into the details of the challenge – a little housekeeping. Everything you need to know about how Project QUILTING began can be found on THIS page.
I’m Trish Frankland, (aka QuiltChicken) and I’m the challenge mistress for this endeavor. That means that even though this is Kim’s thing …. I’m the one who dreams up the rules that you have to follow (insert evil laughter here). I spend all year thinking about these challenges, and I try to mix things up so there’s variety and – always – fun. Please remember: it’s always supposed to be fun.
Every week that you enter a piece for the challenge you are entered into a hat/bucket to win one of the amazing prizes from our sponsors!  Be sure to check out THIS post for all the prizes up for grabs this weeks and to thank our awesome sponsors!  Our Ultimate Weekly Sponsor this week is Aurifil.   AND, if you finish the challenge in the time alotted your name will also be added into the final hat at the completion of the season for an opportunity to win one of the three (1, 2, 3) GRAND PRIZES!  Inspiration, quilting, fun AND Prizes!?  Can it get much better?

Illuminating + Ultimate Gray

If you’ve been around long, you’ve probably heard Kim and I talk about what a Pantone nerd I am. (Last year, Kim gave me the best Christmas gift ever – Pantone fan decks, just like my dad had in his briefcase!) If so, you won’t be surprised that our first challenge this year will be based on Pantone’s Color of the Year 2021 – which is actually two colors: PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating.

As we all look forward to a better year ahead, these colors offer a solid, dependable base (gray) accompanied by a hopeful and sunny outlook (yellow).

Some of you are also chuckling, having heard me talk about my husband Dan’s assertion that every quilt I’ve ever made is nice, “but could have used more yellow.”

Your finished project this week must be predominantly yellow and gray. You may use any shades of gray and any shades of yellow, but you must use both. You may add black and/or white, if you wish, but you do not have to. Fabrics may have other colors included in their print, but those colors may NOT be dominant.
I’m not putting any other limits on you, this time. You can make anything you wish, in any size and from any materials – just make it yellow and gray!

Rule 1 – Your project must be predominantly yellow and gray.

You have one week to meet the challenge. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline – that is, started on or after January 3, 2021, and posted by noon Central January 10, 2021.

Each piece must stand alone as DONE to count toward prizes.
Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements: include patchwork, include appliqué, have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.

Incomplete or unfinished does not qualify. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline.

Link up at the bottom of THIS PAGE by Sunday, January 10th at noon CST (here’s a link to time zone converter to calculate for Central Standard Time: www.thetimezoneconverter.com)

  • Add to the linky the URL of your project’s blog post, instagram picture, or public facebook posting.  This post – How to Link Up a Link Up may help  you.
  • Alternately, by 11am on Sunday, January 10 you may email a picture and description to {lapaceksorchard@gmail.com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line. Yes – that deadline is one hour earlier because it requires more work for Kim.

Good luck, and remember to HAVE FUN! Don’t forget to post progress pictures because that’s part of the fun.

I started working on my project this morning. Got a new puppy a few days ago, so can only work in small chunks of time. Still looking forward to getting a little mini finished for this challenge.

I just found out about this site this week. I love the diversity of the entries from simple projects to wow projects. A fellow quilter once told me to not overthink the design process so this exercise is helpful with a short deadline. Looking forward to the next challenge.

So many entries!!!! lovely quilts and things. I have visited some but I am finding some have no way to comment. In the time when some people are not around a lot of people it would be nice if people would be able to go and visit and comment and create dialog.
