Local Foods Grow Strong Communities 2.0–Farm to Fabric Challenge

November 8, 2014 by persimondreams 5 Comments

Back in May – my friend Shannon from Fabrics N Quilts added to the original Farm to Fabric Challenge with a little more incentive to join in the fun!  Be sure to link up your quilts HERE to qualify for some great prizes.  Here is the story of the quilt I made as a result of this challenge. Local Foods Grow Strong Communities - ENTRY How many of you remember the quilt I made for the Project QUILTING ‘Print Publications’ Challenge?  Well – I posted it above as a reminder.  I called it ‘Local Foods Grow Strong Communities.’  This is one of my favorite pieces and when I saw the ‘Farm to Fabric’ Challenge I thought a second quilt in the series would be fitting.  But what does one do when they only have solids to work with? IMG_0828 Find some stamps and create their own fabric of course!  I found these adorable kid stamps and I used it to make the leaves in my trees … IMG_0832 Here’s what it looked like as I progress.  It’s not perfect but I love the eclectic-ness of it. IMG_1545 I used Ricky Tims’ ‘Caveman Style’ quilting to piece the background of this piece.  IMG_1548 The trunk was a bit more difficult to paint since I couldn’t find any fruit or vegetable stamps that would work for this project.  Instead – I decided to stamp in words throughout the trunk – like ‘Grow’ ‘Local’ ‘Apples’ (of course) and more.  IMG_1549 I continued to build on the background with these pieces. IMG_1576 Once I had everything painted and the background all pieced – it was time for some fusing! localfoods-lapaceks-kim-fullAll that was left then was some quilting (mostly wavy linear lines), squaring up and binding.  I really like how the 2nd in my ‘Local Foods Grow Strong Communities’ Series turned out.  localfoods-lapacek-kim-detail The kids in the trees just make me happy!

Very cool, Kim! Never would have thought to stamp on the fabric. Great job!

I love it! Great idea to stamp on the fabric. Did you use a regular stamp-pad or something special?
